Drinking in moderation wont do much, if youre a chronic issue it will become a problem
But it hurts protein synthesis, it can raise estrogen, cause dehydration and it can also lowest test

I think there's a lot more to it than them both acting on the GABA receptors, otherwise we'd have similar questions regarding AAS that act on the same receptor but have differing effects.

Why does alcohol mess with protein synthesis but benzos dont?

Does your questions have a point? So we can possibly answer everything at once?

i want to know if I will still make gains lifting while taking benzos. I heard alcohol messes with protein synthesis and I am wondering if all GABA drugs do this

Alcohol Clin Exp Res. 2001 Sep;25(9):1373-82.
Alcohol impairs protein synthesis and degradation in cultured skeletal muscle cells.

We have demonstrated that EtOH can directly inhibit muscle protein synthesis under in vitro conditions. Neither EtOH nor its metabolites altered basal protein degradation, although EtOH did compromise the ability of both insulin and IGF-I to slow proteolysis. This impairment seems to be mediated by different defects in signal transduction.

Alcohol impairs leucine-mediated phosphorylation of 4E-BP1, S6K1, eIF4G, and mTOR in skeletal muscle.

Acute alcohol (EtOH) intoxication impairs skeletal muscle protein synthesis. Although this impairment is not associated with a decrease in the total plasma amino acid concentration, EtOH may blunt the anabolic response to amino acids.

Dysregulation of skeletal muscle protein metabolism by alcohol.

Alcohol abuse, either by acute intoxication or prolonged excessive consumption, leads to pathological changes in many organs and tissues including skeletal muscle. As muscle protein serves not only a contractile function but also as a metabolic reserve for amino acids, which are used to support the energy needs of other tissues, its content is tightly regulated and dynamic. This review focuses on the etiology by which alcohol perturbs skeletal muscle protein balance and thereby over time produces muscle wasting and weakness.

I bet benzos do the same thing but pharmacy wont let people know

I dont think thats accurate at all
Prescription drugs plenty or horrible things to people and they have no problem letting anyone know

As a matter of fact it makes sense to claim benzos affect muscle so they can put you on something else to help with loss of muscle and make more money

OP you're making the assumption that because ethanol and benzodiazepines share some similar effects on GABA receptors that they're basically the same. They're very different drugs. And as GF has posted above, the deleterious effects on protein synthesis have nothing to do with GABA.

I've taken benzos before like 20mg of a Valium in the morning and gone to train. And done a good session. I am aware that as CNS depressants this probably wasn't wise as it would technically be tricking your body while working out. But I had bad anxiety at the time and I never noticed benzos stopping any gains.

Alcohol I've been drinking like one out of every two nights recently and havent really noticed any slow in growth either. I'm 24 and male.

Well that alcohol use in moderation that wont have any long term effects on you

There was a study someone posted about alcohol destroying ones natural test on top of a few other metabolic processes it affects. Alcohol and bodybuilding do not mix. It's a liquid poison with the side effect of intoxication.

While I know this isn't quite how it works, the fact you refer to one who is under the influence of alcohol (among other substances) as "inTOXICated" is enough for me haha. It is by definition a poison. Also a carcinogen. It somewhat indiscriminately kills cells.

I miss drinking (well, getting shitfaced every second weekend, but nothing in between)....buuuuuut meh. Literally haven't had a single drink of booze since Jan 6th. Before that was September 12th last year. Fark me, I've had a SINGLE SHOT of tequila in the past 12 months. Fucking alco hahaha

I agree with that. The first study though does say the things in it are a result of heavy drinking
I dont see the harm in drinking in moderation but at the same time if your health or body building are something youre serious about you shouldnt be drinking anyhow

I take Valium before I go into the gym and train , I get anxiety before Im there , I always get anxious when going somewhere where is lots of people :)

While I presume you have a tolerance to benzos of sorts, since you take them for a legit reason and I assume relatively often, do you still notice any negative effects that hinder your workouts?

I have absolutely no tolerance whatsoever to benzos. 10mg valium will have me stumbling around a bit. I can't see myself actually putting in effort with lifting in this state haha, and if I did I'd likely hurt myself.

Also just remembered I drank on one other occasion, roughly this time last year give or take a few days. Was in Thailand, had downed 5mg valium beforehand (literally so I didn't have to drink as much to get tipsy hahaha). Achieved tipsy status after maybe 4 beers. Was good. Would actually rather do this than consume exclusively alcohol, buuuuuuuuuuuut I don't want to condone mixing benzos with alcohol. Shit can get very messy if you're not being wise and restrained about it like I was :p

The issue comes from what is scientifically considered heavy drinking and what is socially considered heavy drinking.

Let's also not forget it's a source of empty calories. :p
