What's Good on European and African TV v. Walking the Dead

Sorry guys but as much as Ii love BB ill always prefer the wire. BB was amazing but it did get quite episodic at times, where as the wire is pure serial storytelling in the best possibble way.

I know this sounds shallow, but I as a network show (as a pose to The Wire which is a HBO subscription show) the general lack of bad language sometimes broke the suspension of disbelief.

Depite what Ive said, Breaking Bad is still one of the best shows of the last decacde, up there with Boaardwalk Empire, Battlestar Glactica and GoT.

I just think the wire is the best of them all.

I loved Boardwalk but felt that the ending was a bit shite. I loved BB, too, but also think The Wire was better. I was just really emotionally invested in The Wire. Everybody in my office, at the time, kept going on about it. This usually puts me off things haha. However, I soon relented and my team leader let me borrow his box set. I marathon watched it and it was a real roller coaster. It was a good way to do it because you need to pay a good bit of attention to what's going on. If I had watched it as it was being released I would have had to re-watch previous seasons to stay clued up.

Program about Socrates with Betany Hughes just starting (9pm wed) on bbc4 - it was buddha last weeks which was good.

Yeah I just watched the Buddha one on iplayer a couple of nights ago and thought it was very good.

Glad you liked 'People just do nothing', Ceres :)

I've been watching anime lately weirdly, for me. Psycho Pass is well good. Reminds me of minority report crossed with demolition man!

Finished watching Death Note, was well entertaining.

I didn't notice that at all. Iirc there was plenty of swearing, especially from Jessie on those many occasions when Walter had fucked up on something or other. It seemed quite appropriate that a school teacher and his middle class family wouldn't swear very much. I didn't notice all that much swearing on The Wire, I only noticed that the dialogue seemed completely spot on and genuine and rang home as being extremely realistic and true to life, which is one of the main reasons that the series is held in such high regard.

I watched a couple of re-runs of TWD on Netflix, and noticed that the goriest violence was very significantly edited out. All the most enjoyably gory scenes had gone. Thank fuck i watched most of it from unedited DVD boxsets or downloads where there had been no editing out.

Perhaps that's what happened with the version of BB you watched?

That's me decided never to bother with Netflix again though, after seeing them tame down all the best bits of TWD, way to go and ruin a great series.

If you're a fan of The Wire, you might be interested in David Simon's new series, airing in the US tonight:

Show Me A Hero

6 episodes.

Show Me a Hero is an American miniseries based on the 1999 nonfiction book of the same name by former New York Times writer, Lisa Belkin.[1][2] The book details a white middle-class neighborhood's resistance to a federally-mandated public housing development in Yonkers, New York, and how these tensions affected the city as a whole.[3][4] The miniseries was written by David Simon and journalist William F. Zorzi – who Simon worked with at the Baltimore Sun and on The Wire. It was directed by Paul Haggis.[1] Six episodes were ordered by HBO[1] and will premiere on August 16, 2015.

I'll be having a look at this tomorrow. If it's anything like all his other stuff, it'll be great. Good reviews. :)

I see the book was written by a NYT writer..might give it a miss ;)

I'm only joking, of course! Sounds worth a peep. Thank you for the heads up!

Anyone here who hasnt seen homeland... check it out. worth a watch

Yeah... welcome to 4 years ago, Dan. ;)

Has anyone heard of The Wire? Or perhaps Breaking Bad? I heard they're worth a look.

I heard something about those through the grapevine. I might have to give them a look when I've finished watching Dallas.

Here's another one that might be good - you like cars, don't you Dan?

Couldnt give a fuck if its 4 years. Havent seen it mentioned much here, so thought i'd mention it

I'm pretty sure i slagged it off a bit earlier ;) - something about telly programs that prepare the public consciousness for the state doing horrible things (like 24 did for torture before), and while appearing to be nuanced, they slip in outrageous framing and assumptions about muslims, terror, foreign policy, american heros to bad apple ratios etc; plus the fact that the original israeli series it was based on did the same propaganda job for israeli audiences.

...but i liked the theme tune.

(but people shouldn't use cynical old arrogant me as any sort of guide: i don't like most telly i watch)
