Site Feedback The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later. - Mega/Merged

awesome. pm me and i'll tell you where to send the check.

:)

With a forum this size you should have all the bucks needed.

However if I sent you a good donation say $300 would you guarantee me this won't happen again.

Or would you be willing to take on a partner?

These questions can solve these problems.

Edit: After some digging WOW is all I can say. This site does rather well IMO.

I'm guessing you've shopped around for the best server host?

Yes I have /had my own forum. It was very large at one point then we were hit with spam by the millions. I was forced to close registration. Lost a lot of members or potential members and the forum slowed way down. I closed it as of 2 months ago. I had it for 8 years.

And "host gator" seems to be one of the best.

care to expand? why should we have all the bucks needed?

no, i can't guarantee it but that should not stop you from donating :)

the site ownership has made a conscious decision to not use advertising as a revenue source. as such, we operate in a constrained environment. the 'server too busy' issue is receiving attention but bluelight is staffed entirely by volunteers so people have 'real' jobs and real lives which come first.

PM to arrive.

And this is a great awesome site. I appreciate that there is a place like this. I appreciate the people that make this possible.

Thank you.

I really appreciate not seeing annoying and stupid ads everywhere and to be honest I prefer that theres a few hours in the day where the site is unusable than seeing ads. Not mentioning that most of these ads are scams :|

Thank you to keep this place enjoyable.

Which is a good decision IMO.

I only originally posted it from a perspective of a member who enjoys using BL and meant it in a 'is there something we can do to help' - or is it just a tech fault?

If a new server is needed then is it possible to find out the new cost and start a bit of a mission to help raise funds to move server and fix the problem?

I just mean that there's a lot of people who enjoy BL and if it meant starting up a new donations page with the specific target to raise money so we can chip in to move servers, I think I speak for a lot of members when I say we'll be happy to help!

I know there's a general donations page which is used by members, but I just think that if a new server is needed and BL needs funds from members to move then a bit of a campaign to raise money to move could be a good idea.

Just feel that as a member, if there's anything I can do to help, I will! And I'm sure I'm not the only one!

If your really that concerned, throw a donation in better yet I think bluelight should run a bit of a fundraiser for server costs

it seems to be better today, did Not Again donate $300? I would donate $300 if I knew it would fix it too. I've already donated, though, and it made no apparent difference!

This cannot be a hardware issue. I have a system here that BL can have if necessary, I'm sure I've offered it before! A quad-opteron with 8GB RAM IIRC. But hardware is cheap. This must be a hosting problem. But no-one ever tells us.

^ there's never been a suggestion that there's a straight line between a donation and a performance improvement. donate $25 and the server will get 0.25% faster! donate $100 and the server will get 1% faster! obviously there's a very general link between income and overall performance but to suggest it's as direct as you imply is, well, a little silly. i'm not sure where that's coming from.

the site engineer is working on some general server and software issues and we're hopeful that, when this work is complete, there will be a significant improvement with regard to this issue. we know it's frustrating and we're working on it. we'll update as and when we can.

Good to hear! :)

I've only just become aware of the amount of traffic that the site gets through guests browsing alone, currently just 96 members browsing and 2,485 guests!

No I didn't suggest a straight line between donation and "performance improvement". Did I? In fact I implied there is no such link:

I've already donated, though, and it made no apparent difference!

See, I said "donating has no effect" =D

anyway, let's have a point to the post. Whatever needs done, let's do it. Where's the engineer? Who is (s)he? How can I tap into their brain?

you implied that donating should mean an automatic performance improvement. that makes little sense (to me).

what needs to be done is being done. thanks.

alasdair

you implied that donating should mean an automatic performance improvement.

I most certainly did not.

I said I've donated. I've no idea where my money went or how it was used. I am still getting server busy messages. I would like it fixed. I am available to help.

what needs to be done is being done. thanks.

nonsense.

for others reading, my previous post was not nonsense (and i'm not sure how knock could know that as, it seems, we never tell him anything.) :)

the bluelight engineer is working on a number of server issues and we're optimistic that, when that work is complete, it will address the "server is too busy..." issue in large part. as most know, we're staffed entirely by volunteers and that work takes time - longer, i am sure, than many of us would like in an ideal world.

we know it's frustrating but we are addressing it. we'll update you when we can.

alasdair

I've told you by PM why I think it was nonsense, this thread is almost 18 months old! :D I've offered my technical help and you haven't taken me up on it.

Yeah this issue is very frustrating, I hope it is resolved soon. Seems to have been going on for along time.

I've archived around 2000 threads from EADD. I'm not sure if that'll make much difference, but in the absence of any other information it makes sense to me that the database query which loads the EADD sub-forum index will take less time if there are fewer threads to return.

What is causing this sudden problem of "server busy" bullshit?

During certain times it can sometimes take 10 minutes before I can submit my post in a gap of business.

Is it due to over trafficking or have you recently changed server operators (or whatever the name you'd use for them).. if the latter I highly recommend changing your provider :p

Is there anything (other than donating) we can do at home?

Maybe it's seasonal. This problem has started happening constantly for me over the last couple of weeks
