Xenon as a nootropic

Hi all. New to this forum. Not sure if this is the right place to post this thread, but I'm recently interested in nootropics and have heard some things about xenon gas which is now available to buy in small quantities for use as a nootropic. Has anyone had any experience with xenon before? It's legal and from what I can find online, it looks pretty safe.

I was under the impression that Xenon had effects similar to N2O, e.g. dissociative. How would that be considered nootropic?

Never heard this before, but probably it´s just marketed as a nootropic, just like phenibut. Try to sell a legal anaesthetic as such and you´ll know why ;)

NMDA antagonists can have nootropic-like effects indeed if used right. I thought that the duration / half live of any gas would be too short, but maybe even such a brief but strong blockade exerts the same thing too...?

I have seen those Xenon "bags" online and as far as I read they are used by athletes to increase their red blood cell count and hence their performance. I am unsure though if these Xenon preparations could get you high in the same way a normal tank would. If it does then it is a cheap and comfortable way of getting high on dissociative gasses. I wish they did something similar with nitrous oxide too. Anyone tried it?

Eh?
I'm very unsure of how xenon would be beneficial outside of something like a stroke. Granted to get any sustained effect you'd have to rig up some kind of Bane mask with the half life it has in the body

I thought xenon was prohibitively expensive to be used as an anesthetic without some crazy recycling systems. How do you even buy it? Aldrich won't sell the unwashed masses lecture bottles of the shit (in fact they can't even provide pricing so that's a sign that it's probably less availiable than you want it to be) and even from a specialty gas company you're gonna be probably into the thousands of dollars for a little cylinder. And they don't make Xe crackers for my whipped cream can.

Also, in general, NMDA antagonists are pretty much the furthest thing from nootropics. All the inhalational anesthetics are pretty firmly in the "reduced cognitive functions" department due to the difficulty of dosing them. I would actually sidle on over to the other side of the periodic table and look at our good friend rubidium - it's a pharmacologically activie monoamine reupatake inhibitor I thought.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as sourcing because it isn't a drug per se, but there is a company selling bags of xenon for athletic training (for several hundred dollars per bag).

Xenon is an up-regulator for norepinephrine. The basics are that initially it acts an a re-uptake inhibitor, but then also causes the additional production of norepinephrine. A study on this was done in 2012, in Br. J. Anaesth. 2012, 109, 887. The authors state they do not know the mechanism that causes the increased norepinephrine. Increased norepinephrine would increase your ability to concentrate -- which would certainly qualify it as a nootropic. (See also link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/BF03016198.pdf)

It has also been shown to be useful in treating Parkinson's. A study was done that basically shows that it can be used as a replacement for amantadine -- without the negative side effects. https://www.michaeljfox.org/foundation/grant-detail.php?grant_id=906

It is not clear if xenon works as a dopamine re-uptake inhibitor as well. Some places offer "xenon therapy" for treatment of opioid and alcohol dependency, which would seem to be related to being a dopamine re-uptake inhibitor, but there are no studies establishing this.

Thanks for all the info. I may give it a try. I work long hours with a job that requires intense concentration. I hear now they may be testing xenon to see if it has any effect when done regularly on people with OCD and depression--I don't have either but it would be interesting to see if there's an effect--maybe this would be due to increasing norepinephrine levels? A guy on another forum posted how he had a lot of energy a few hours after doing a bag of it. Maybe the next Viagra, haha. I wonder what the actual "dosage" you are supposed to do is though? I can't really find this info anywhere...any advice from people who have tried it?

The Erowid trip report on Xe that I read years ago sounded kinda interesting, but $(x*12.5 to * 25 ... no pricing is still a rule right?) for what is probably the rough recreational equivalent of what you can get for $(x to x*2) (the price has inflated a shitton over the years) in nitrous in the parking lot of your local hippie circuit concert? Yeah no thanks, or maybe in my more adventurous years just to do something different and to say that I'd done it. Some of the pharmacology in this thread is new to me and interesting though. I highly doubt Xe is a practicable , and certainly isn't an affordable, nootropic.

As Seiko says - it costs a bomb. I've huffed it from an almost-empty lecture bottle, all I got was a LOOOOOOOOOOOOW voice. I doubt it's nootropic effects, but that is an area I will happily let others explain to me (please).

Interesting, though any dissociative (even more so in anesthetic doses) can be helpful when kicking addictions..

It's expensive and isn't very potent. The MAC value is 72 making it weak by most standards but from what you say, maybe a version of 'Detox 5' that keeps people on subanesthetic doses but EVERY inhalational anaesthetic carries their own risks (some it's malignant hyperthermia, some it's heart - long QT.... there is a big list I once had to learn for an exam... as with all data learned for exams, it is now lost.

The way it's used by most professional or semi-pro athletes (and it's been going on for at least a decade that I know of) is via blood saturation - extract the blood, add xenon, re-infuse. I'm not sure other ROAs have been shown to be very effective...
