I liked Speed Racer

Me, too, man. I liked it.
That feels amazing, saying it.
It's like a weight has been lifted.
This is my coming out.

Lynch's adaptation of Dune was more of a misfire than the Wachowski's adaptation of Speed Racer.

Lynch musta been off kilter on blow that year or something lol

Lynch has no idea how to do a big budget space epic.

Spielberg would have fucked up Eraserhead.

Everybody has their place.

Lynch was more faithful to the book than Spielberg would've been. Man I don't think I could've sat through a Spielberg Dune.

I believe that if Lynch were able to have split the story into two films as he wanted and like they're doing now and had creative freedom (including final cut), and not constant cost-cutting, and his choice of filming locations, it'd be a much better film.

While it would've helped him make a better movie, the experience was necessary for him to become the director he perhaps wanted to be.

Agh, I remembered as I drifted off to sleep; perhaps this is some of the 'wokeness' in the new version, the Orange Catholic Bible is completely omitted, as was the character of Feyd Rautha (very, very integral to the plot...), so now I'm like... wait, how will part two end if Feyd isn't there?! And what has Dennis got against the O.C. Bible? In the future, I'm 100% certain Catholicism will survive and thrive as we see in the book. It's already 2000 years old as a faith and people aren't dropping their faith any time soon. Not to mention, the O.C. Bible plays into further religious intrigue in the book, so leaving it out and focusing solely on the Bene Gesserit/Fremen for theology kinda leaves it feeling more bland.

I realize it is a long novel, and hard to adapt. But David Lynch managed to include these plot points, even if Sting was cast as Feyd... at least he existed!

Oh yeah, and Baron Harkonnen is suspiciously un-pedophilic in Dennis's adaptation. In the book and in Lynch's version (IIRC) he was a fucking disgusting boy fucker of a man, it plays into the feudal nature of Dune... history repeats itself. Disgusting fat despots have always liked young boys going back to the beginning of time.

Not too important to the plot, but just goes to show how much I'm suddenly realizing this adaptation left out.

Oh man looking back, Sting wasn't even bad as Feyd Rautha... that scene that birdup posted, when Feyd comes out of the steam mostly naked lol... that's pretty much exactly how I imagined him in the book. Lynch got the plot points down so much better as it were.

Willy's Wonderland

Nic Cage doesn't say a word throughout the film. It is a feature length montage of him doing janitorial work, playing pinball and beating the living shit out of animatronic robots.

The plot makes less sense than you'd imagine.

There's not much positive to say about this one.

My favorite film with Sting in it is Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. His character is pretty unexceptional though. He definitely gives a better performance in Dune.

Dude, I didn't even know he was in Lock Stock! I just watched it a month ago, I guess I didn't recognize him lol.

Ohhhhh, he played the dad of the young gambler guy! Totally missed that. Doesn't look the same as he did in '84 lol

I loved the new Dune. Haven't seen the old one but I am interested in reading the book now!

I know there is a ton of stuff to read in that universe. Would anyone like to recommend which ones are necessary and what order to read them in?

I’d just start with the first book. I read half of the third one at BCT while I was waiting to be discharged after my injuries and it only made a little sense since I’d seen the Lynch film as a teen.

I’ve only fully read the first book so far, but it’s probably my favorite book of all time now.

Definitely start with Frank Herbert's Dune. Then if you're into it read the rest. There will be a of Dune novels in order in the front of the book.

I think Frank Herbert's son may have written several as well. There's no telling what other additions have been made in the ensuing decades.

I'm gonna have to give everything a rewatch at some point.
