Film What's the Last Film You Saw? v. Tell Us What You Thought!

Jay & Silent Bob: Reboot
Whilst I thought J&SB Strike Back was meh, I did enjoy Clerks/Mallrats/Chasing Amy, so thought I'd give this a go. Bad idea.

The Talented Mr. Ripley

Weird slow-burn drama, but real good acting from Matt Damon (dare I say that?). The ending had me confused about the point of the film/nature of Damon's character. Cate Blanchet got too little screen time too.

I don't think I'll give it a second watching to be honest. Good but not great. Good acting but an odd plot.

The Silence of the Lambs

Jodi Foster was one sexy babe as of 1991. I think that was the whole idea behind her casting in the lead role of this film. Over and over the concept of sexuality and coveting is brought up in subtle ways. Anthony Hopkins really brought the film together of course, his legendary role as Hannibal the Cannibal was phenomenal and utterly convincing.

This movie disturbs without even showing you half the gruesomeness that your average horror film does. It also seem as if Dana Scully in the X-Files was based off of Jodi Foster's character in this film, coming out only a year or two before that series started. Well worth a watch. Haunting and well shot. The kinda film that keeps you up at night, not because of imagery... but because of what you imagine.

Rosemary's Baby

I was surprisingly delighted by Polanski's horror classic. Not your average horror film, more psychological like most of the horror movies I post about. No real gore, some quite psychedelic scenes involving satanic ritual, etc. For a 1968 film, it was amazing at creating an air of unease while not being 'frightening', and the ending was just perfect. If you're into the occult, this is a film for you. Really enjoyed it.

Midsommer

I really enjoyed the previous two horror films released by A24 I've seen (those being The Witch and The Lighthouse) so when this popped up on Prime I gave it a try. I'd heard someone mention that if I liked psychedelics I'd enjoy the movie. Well, they were kinda off. There are definitely hints throughout the film that the characters are frequently being drugged. Like the other two A24 films I've seen a lot was left up to interpretation. It was hard to connect to the characters though, and the sense of suspense or sheer confused surprise was stronger than any sense of tension or fear.

It was just okay I'd say. Worth your time if you're bored; probably lots of imagery to dissect that went over my head. In the end though, I felt like I understood The Lighthouse better, and that's saying something lol.

Cream Gravy, have you ever seen "Kill List" (2011)? If you like dark, ambiguous horror/suspense-type films, you may like that one.

loved it and hereditary...all a24s stuff really
I guess hereditary is next on my list then.

I just don’t get what Midsommer was supposed to be about. The imagery was disturbing but the plot was completely lost on me. There’s ambiguous and then there’s that.

Oh, I watched Akira the other day while frying. It was literally the creepiest, strangest, most existentially questioning animated feature I’ve ever bore witness to. I think Neon Genesis Evangellion was heavily inspired by the themes in Akira.

Still has me thinking. I don’t know how to feel about Akira.

I really liked midsommar, but hereditary is far superior imo.

to me, midsommar was all about relationships. What it means to be in one. The importance of family.

I couldn't stomach the gore in the end. What I truly enjoyed about The Witch and The Lighthouse was the disturbed feeling I had without gory imagery such as people being turned into a cadaver. or having their skull smashed in.

Akira was too gory too, my jaw was agape the whole time. I'm pretty used to anime unintentionally disturbing me though. Princess Mononoke gave me nightmares when I was 13 lol.

I don't typically like gore either. But I think Aster does it tastefully, in other words, not gratuitously. its always artistic and there's always a reason.

There are a few pretty intense parts of Hereditary but nothing like Midsommar really. I just really loved that movie, I still think about it randomly from time to time.

Inception (2010)

Amazing movie. Back when it first came out I balked about how 'mind blowing' people thought it was, and I still think a lot of it was lost on those same people... however, this film was Nolan's crowning achievement, it's what he'll be remembered for. I loved his first film Following, but Inception outdoes even his earliest films. Better even than The Prestige or Memento. His more recent films have languished but Inception is something that will become his legacy. So mind bending, such a great film. I recommend psychedelics be ingested prior to viewing ;)

Fitzcarraldo (1982)

This was my first time watching a Werner Herzog film. The subject matter of the film is odd yet entirely entertaining and based upon a true story. A mad looking, wealthy South American man falls so in love with opera that he attempts to build an opera house in the middle of bum-fuck-nowhere native territory along some river where most expeditions had gone missing.

The acting, especially from the lead character played by Klaus Klinski is superb, but what really made this two and a half hour film enjoyable was the gorgeous, sweeping imagery. A visual feast you might say.

While I don't plan on rewatching it any time soon, I greatly enjoyed it, and plan to explore more Herzog films in the near future. It's on Amazon Prime right now for those that are interested.

Twelve Angry Men (1957)

Apparently, this was based upon a play (didn't know till my wife mentioned it), and what made this film uniquely superb was that the whole film takes place in a single room/scene essentially. It raises questions to the viewer about our inner biases that I'm shocked to have seen in a 1950s film. All of the actors really put forth amazing efforts and are very convincingly average Americans.

It wasn't the most entertaining of films, but for what it is, it excels. I highly recommend giving it a watch, and it seems to be an especially apt film for our times, pointing out that 70 years on, Americans are still the same biased, racist ass people we've always been.

Also on Prime for those that are interested.

Drive (2011)

I love Ryan Gosling in a man crush way, wife loves him in a similar fashion. He also happens to be an amazing actor, and Drive really showcases that. We watched it last night and I loved it. A bit more gory than I expected, but a great action film none the less. The soundtrack was very retro-80s sounding and I've been binge listening to the opening credits song Nightcall. Loved the visual styling of the film, the altruism of the unnamed Driver, just about everything. The ending wasn't what I expected and I honestly thought there'd be more 'driving' scenes lol, but very enjoyable still. Great performances from Oscar Issac and Brian Cranston as well.

7.5/10 (want to rate it higher but I can't because I don't feel it belongs to the 8/10+ category that the best of films reach)

Herzog is a great documentary filmmaker too...I've only seen a few of his documentaries ("Grizzly Man", "Into the Abyss" and "Cave of Forgotten Dreams") but I've liked them all. Grizzly Man is especially good IMO

That new jay and silent bob movie was indeed absolutely horrible, a coming of age movie for stoner boomers. I mean, that hit home too hard, lol. :(

Jesus rolls was equally as bad, softcore porn was more like it. There was no dude, the only dude was me saying dude, was that necessary? :(

21 bridges, uhh, I only saw like 2 so far, but I'm not really paying attention, half of this movie is just gunfire and endless rounds, don't understand how there's 45 mins left when this is clearly the end. :(

Haven't seen it. I thought Clerks was a masterpiece. The sequel was so bad though, I don't think I want to see any more Jay and Silent Bob films.

For some reason, I've never been able to sit through more than fifteen minutes of this. It's a good concept though, might try and rewatch at some point.

My attention span for movies and television is the worst these days. It sucks, I used to really enjoy watching films and talking about them.

That said, last movie I watched was The Irishman and I found that captivating enough. It was epic in the sense that the story spanned about five decades. Quieter, more subtle than Casino & Goodfellas, but definitely a worthwhile addition to that sub-genre of gangster flick.

Yeah the Irishman was pretty good, I thought so too. It was pretty long and the computer-augmented characters...I wasn't into that so much...but it was still entertaining. Great performance by Joe Pesci in that...he's not in his old overblown mode, in The Irishman he's just laid back but constantly ordering murders by just looking at de Niro's character and raising his eyebrows or making subtle comments
