Misc What's best to counter sexual side effects of ssri?

My brief stint with an SSRI was prozac and it made me almost impotent. Almost. There was a certain satisfaction when I achieved orgasm. Had to really work on it. I was depressed so I isolated myself a lot then, but when I had the occasional lady over, I still tried in spite to please us despite a sort of a helpless feeling regarding the unresponsiveness of my dick. In spite of performance anxiety, it was oddly satisfying to achieve orgasm in spite of that handicap. I found myself really working at it, which can be fun too. Helped to have a safe partner to play with. So if you need your SSRI to function better, you just might have to learn to take your arousal to new heights, and your biggest erogenous zone will always be your mind. Your partner will likely appreciate your determination.

I've been taking SSRIs for about 10 years and it's hit or miss with them. Honestly if you're thinking about other drugs to counteract certain effects of this, you should prolly stop and reevaluate your current mental state for a moment, no offense. You take the good with the bad and outweigh the consequences to the benefits.... personally I've been on Paxil, Effexor, and Prozac one at at time for a decade - and some weeks I'm ready to go - and the other 10 months of the year I can't get it up... But I'd much rather that than be crippled to my own slumber due to fucked up anxiety and panic attacks that consume me.

Bottom line is that SOME antidepressants will do some things and others wont.... talk to your doctor about the issues...you may be switched to another, who knows, psychiatrists know their shit, so long as you arent going to a pill mill.... I mentioned impotence already myself, but was instead offered xanax, and to the dismay of many, I declined (Thank you bluelight for the benzo dependency horror stories).

just a quick disclaimer I read this thread awhile ago when it was fresh and didnt get a chance to reply til now... so i didnt read many of the new ones.. sorry if its redundant information... but truly if you want anything other than personal experiences you'd just see a doctor, ya know? best of luck buddy

I already tried mirtazapin didnt work and made me fat.

The thing is ssri dont even seem to work for me either. I tried lexapro 20mg before didnt work.
If this crap at least helped with ocd, depression, anxiety then it would be worth to accept the side effects but I am sceptical
that zoloft will work when lexapro didnt. I dont know why nothing works for me. :(

And when i'm depressed and feel empty then often times i just want to jack off but now i cant even do that without struggling
and having to watch porn as extra stimulation and porn is bad it's totally addictive. :(

and sicne i have no gf i feel even worse cause now where i watch porn i want to nail a chick and cant. :(

sounds like your a bit OCD about sex and masturbating, maybe your not depressed just anxious, so benzos may help you? I know if my anxiety plays up I get obscessed about sex n manic somewhat,

wow, a lot of people on this thread are a) sure that SSRIs are bad drugs, and b) basing that opinion on an N=1 study... themselves. i'm no apologist for the pharma companies, but come on: SSRIs have shown huge efficacy in treating depressive illnesses. even a cursory google search will pull up a huge amount of literature that echoes this. for example:

Kroenke, Kurt, et al. "Similar effectiveness of paroxetine, fluoxetine, and sertraline in primary care: a randomized trial." Jama 286.23 (2001): 2947-2955.

i picked that article because it's highly cited, in a reputable journal, and it's not behind a paywall. there are plenty others, too.

are SSRIs free of side-effects? of course not. and each patient needs to balance the pros and cons. but to say across the board that they're a shit class of drugs is wrong and potentially misleading/dangerous.

^^we arent saying SSRIs are bad drugs, we are just saying they are terrible when it comes to causing sexual side effects..ive tried 4 different ssris and all of them pretty much killed my sex drive and ability..Paxil made me useless although it helped depression/anxiety somewhat but made me a zombie that had zero desire for sex..also, ssris gave me anorgasmia, where even if you do finish you dont feel anything which is awful..

imo not enough is said about ssris and the sexual side effects ..sure, they help depression but damn, a healthy sex life is very important to a guy in his 20 and 30s..the weight gain isnt fun either..

as far as trying to counter the sexual side effects by adding welbutrin, i tried that and it helpe for a few days but then made the problem and my anxiety worse!then i tried yohimbe which increased sex drive but when it came to sexual ability, it was a mixed blessing..sometimes you would get rock hard and other times, its not happening..besides, it makes you anxious as hell...i then tried ephedrine and similar problems as yohimbe..so id go with what the other poster said, you have to evaluate which is more important, mood or sex..

tbh, in all my experience with anti-depression and anti-anxiety drugs they all fucking ruin my sex life, some more than others..

All the SSRI's will have effects on sexual arousal. I will tell you this though, when i was on zoloft it was almost impossible to jack off in the beginning. But the longer you stay on it, the more adjusted your body will be to the medication. It was still hard to get off once i was on the medication for a few months but still much better than before.

Honestly i find stimulants helpful (meth) how ever... i don't know if it is worth a possible addiction just to bust a nut.....

I haven't read much of this thread but it sounds like more people saying that SSRIs are always horrible which is kind of getting old.

They help some people and they don't help others and of course they have side effects.

And I've never had negative sexual side effects in 20 years of using them so no one should say that they always cause those problems because they don't.

Well, my advice would be to implement a PDE5 inhibitor (e.g., sildenafil; tadalafil) in combination with a drug like, say, amphetamine. If your sexual dysfunction still persists, you're screwed (pun not intended, but it works).

Oh yeah, I'd stop taking SSRIs forthwith. Your pudenda will thank you.
