What is the difference between a possum and an opossum?

I've never been able to get at whether they are the same thing or not and hoped one of my American friends could enlighten me?

And the answer is.....who the hell knows. I mean kinda, why is it so important? Aha, it just struck me, you're making "Roadkill Stew" and aren't sure.which species is OK and what is not. Well, I do believe some mountain man has probably penned just such a cookbook. I'd check on Amazon if it were.me.

Um, about an "O"'s worth, LOL

When Iived in rural NC it was possum, but I think city folks call it opossum. Either way it the same large tasty, rodent. BTW they may "play dead" when confronted, but do NOT corner one if you are trying to hunt one
