Hello all

My name is Fiona - I work with a production company called IWC Media in Scotland specialising in intelligent and thoughtful documentaries. Programmes we have made include Terry Pratchett: Living with Alzheimer’s and The Secret Life of a Manic Depressive with Stephen Fry, as well as blue chip science programmes such as Brave New World and Stephen Hawking – Master of the Universe.

I am currently doing some background research into recreational drug taking amongst older people (50+), for a potential Channel 4 documentary. I would very much like to speak to drug users in this age group - people who are highly functioning members of society who also form a very hidden part of society in which they manage their non dependent drug use alongside careers, families and other responsibilities.

The documentary will be non judgemental in tone and I would like to stress I am at the research stage at the moment - there is absolutely no filming involved at this point or indeed at any point without having someone’s full permission to film them. Confidentiality is also something I take very seriously and we are not a company who make voyeuristic programmes.

I’ve already spoken with a number of people who have been kind enough to be open about their drug use and looking to talk to more people in the next couple of weeks. Please either private message me here or email [email protected]

Hi Fiona, thanks for posting. I thoroughly enjoyed all the programs you mentioned - just re-watched Stephen Fry's The Secret Life of a Manic Depressive yesterday!

Sounds like a very promising concept for a program. I think it would be very popular. Many people are clueless as to the prevalence of drug use among highly functioning members of society. Among the drug-using community itself the extent is still largely unknown. Even on an anonymous forum such as Bluelight, people tend to limit the degree to which they share personal details such as occupation, especially if they potentially have a lot to lose.

Just to clarify, are you only looking for people from the UK who you can meet in person?

Hi

Thanks for getting in touch. I'm glad you like the sound of the documentary. At the moment we are concentrating on finding contributors from the UK. We are not adverse to a bit of travel but it would probably be confined to Europe and would be in the context of following one of our characters, say on holiday or to a particular event.

I'm really keen to find as broad a range of people as possible as I want to get the sense that recreational drug use in the over 50's is all around us - and done by people who are highly functioning members of society. I am open to discussing the possibility of remaining anonymous within the documentary itself so if you know of anyone who might be interested in talking to me please do pass on my contact details.

Also - if you have any other suggestions of where to find people please give me a shout!

Fiona

Hi Fiona, although I sympathize and fit your criteria - I'm 66 and still in employment - I wouldn't want to be on TV.
We are difficult group to reach, as we have other responsibilities and hide our drug use in the interest of the children and or less tolerant/ignorant peers.
I hope you can find some participants though.

It's a shame that you aren't investigating younger drug users (18 - 30) like myself. I think if you ever did deicide to do so and talk to real people, unlike BBC3 that always seems to keep up with the stigma of drug use; the results would be interesting.

I know this is irrelevant to your request however I can not help but to inform you that many younger users are very educated and highly motivated. I wish I could convey this to everyone! Unfortunately there are too many people that get plastered all over the media for being 'stupid' whilst under the influence that let the rest of us down.

Just a thought :)
