Treatment Services (including 12-step) Helplines & Meds info - Please Add To Our List

I'm hoping (perhaps a little idealistically) that this thread can be a collaborative effort that unfolds over time.

Amongst the many threads in TDS about drug addiction, alcohol abuse and mental illness there seems to be a common theme: where to go to get help? We've had a support numbers thread in TDS before, but the list was compiled a long time ago and is presumably somewhat out of date. Similarly, there have been a number of posts recommending treatment services but nowhere for them to be consolidated as a resource for people to access.

My aim with this thread is to put together as many links to helpful services or websites as possible. If you have anything to recommend then please do so. I'll be adding to this thread regularly, but if it's just me doing so then everywhere bar Australia may be a little under-represented. :)

Similarly, if you need something in a specific location then ask here – someone may be able to help. Although NO requests for 'doctors who will prescribe me benzos' or similar, please.

So – anything you've found helpful, please share with us and hopefully it can help someone else.

*************************************************************************************************

'12-step meetings worldwide' thread - please add your links!

Useful websites for accessing drug and alcohol or mental health services in Australia

Government directories of drug and alcohol treatment services:

Victoria: http://www.health.vic.gov.au/drugs/sd.htm

New South Wales: http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/public-health/dpb/treatment.htm

Northern Territory: http://www.nt.gov.au/health/healthdev/aodp/choose/contacts.html

Queensland: http://www.health.qld.gov.au/atods/links/other.asp (not actually a directory, but the closest thing I could find. This report outlines some treatment facilities, but isn’t searchable for any contact information aside from names).

South Australia: http://www.dassa.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm

Tasmania: http://www.dhhs.tas.gov.au/services/view.php?id=354

Western Australia: http://www.dao.health.wa.gov.au/Ser...ectory/tabid/96/PageContentID/52/Default.aspx

University counselling services

edit: My old link to every free/low-cost university counselling service in Aus has disappeared. I’ll try to hunt it down. Again, these are a useful ways of obtaining free or means-tested counselling, even if you aren’t a student. Services are often provided by students with probationary qualifications in psychology or other disciplines. While these services are often billed specifically as counselling, in some instances they function more as a referral service.

http://ccvillage.buffalo.edu/vpc.html

A US site with ‘virtual pamphlets’ for many universities outlining their counselling services. The list of services is extensive and extends beyond mental health to include drug and alcohol services as well. Obviously specific policies will differ between institutions, but this site still has a lot of good information in general.

Good Idea.

For all people located in Queensland, i highly recommend Biala Health Services. They are a free, comprehensive Drug and Alcohol treatment facility, offering everything from counselling, to out-patient rehab to various referral services.

The staff that work here are some of the nicest, and most professional people i have ever encountered.

Contact: (07) 3238 4040

They also have a 24hr needle exchange facility attached to the centre. It is located behind the Roma St Police Station, on Turbot St.

Fucking belter Sushii , perhaps we could make an international info thread ?
Take a bit of effort (which we frankly are supremely unused to) but we can if we want to ?

some of us live in europe and americas too!

maybe later today ill look around for US centers...

Of course I want it to be international, that's what I meant by this.

My focus is invariably going to be Australia simply because I have experience with the services here and can locate (and weed out the dodgier ones!) more easily.

I'd love it if you guys added some links for your regions. Once I've done as much as I can for Aus I'll move on to looking elsewhere, but ideally if enough people contribute we should get a pretty representative spread of services in various locations.

Melbournians- i'm not going to list the names of any psychiatrists/psychologists here, but PM me as I am undergoing treatment from the best two i've encountered.

The CAT (Crisis Assesment Team), a mental crisis team, while being useless for me, can be apparently helpful.

Heres a link to more Victorian stuff- http://www.health.vic.gov.au/mentalhealth/services/adult/

MENSLINE- 1300 78 99 78

Kids Help Line- yes i'm sure theres kids on board.

All good :)

Willow makes a good point - no individual names please! Organisations, websites, directories etc. are fine.

FANTASTIC idea Sushii!

It's just what those of us on TDS need access to, and a great resource all in one place!

goddamn you aussies have it good compared to us over here in the states!! :p

theres not even a needle exchange here in texas. not even half the states have one!

^ Based on my link alone, or is this a problem you're already aware of? Because I have no idea how comprehensive that link is, and I'll be trying to find more services for the states not covered.

Again, this is where local knowledge is going to help!

pip, do you mind if I include the list of treatment services you posted a few weeks back here as well?
