Does anybody else here buy films despite the availability of torrents and other digital methods of ownership?

Despite my use of torrents to have a look at certain things i`m not sure if ill like and stuff I miss at the cinema, I`m still fairly anal about my dvd / blue ray collection, they look cool on the shelves + im a fan of audio commentaries

Is it just me left chucking money down the toilet?

Depends.

If there is good enough bonus content AND I really really enjoy repeated viewings I will purchase.

So far the only thing that meets those prerequisites is the Simpsons. I got the first 10 seasons on eBay for like 60 bucks. Hella good condition. And I never use the word hella, so that says something.

I love the audio commentary on every episode, the deleted scenes, the commercials, rough sketches, etc. You can't get any of that on the internet.

For the most part though, I don't bother to buy simply out of convenience. If I can find it streaming online, it's faster than having the physical copy.

i will buy it if i love it, but i've thrown out all my dvd boxes and kept the discs in sleeves. i hate the space they take up.

yea I only buy if it is truly an awesome movie that I love

but I just download torrents mostly and I can put them onto my wii onto my bigscreen

Having an interest in a career in the film industry, I feel for the people who lose money due to pirating. (Not the A-listers or studio execs, but the makeup artists, camera people, post-production....all those little names that you see at the end of a movie).

Also, the studios don't gamble as much on different scripts and rehash the same old money-making shit. That's why we've been getting so many sequals, remakes, and 3D.

But I am poor, so I don't have lots of disposable income to spend on DVDs.

If a truly different, amazing movie comes out that I know I'll watch several times, I'll purchase it. It's not much, but if the studios know they can make money on original ideas, they'll be more likely to put out good films in the future.

I like to buy as many proper copies that I can, but the only brand new discs I get are blu rays. Most of the dvds im buying at present are second hand (very cheap in the UK ATM), so although I try to pirate as little as possible, I`m hardly contributing alot of monies to the film induustry either

i've never downloaded a movie. If you pay attention, movies can eventually be found for a reasonable price--no way left to justify piracy in my book. and I'm sure with effort you can have a set-up where you have downloaded movies playing on you HD screen in HD, but i'm not making that effort for multiple reasons and i'll settle for nothing less. I have a great dvd collection, but not one blueray and I have not bought many movies since HD became significant to me. i dont wanna spend any more money on dvds, because they are obsolete to blurays, and i dont wanna invest in bluray because they already have 1080p streaming; bluray is gonna be a thing of the past in a few years, IMO.

so i'm in a weird place where I live off of my past dvd collection and Netflix. i liked buying individual movies to see whenever i wanted like that; i just think that style of movie purchasing is going to be a thing of the past soon.

Torrents are always my first port of call, but if I like what I have downloaded I'll generally buy it. Games are the only thing I buy upfront these days and that's only because of Steam :p

After pirating over 500 DVDs over 5 or so years, i'm now buying all my blu-rays.

I guess there's a few reasons for this. I originally looked into and bought a blu-ray burner. When I realised I needed a whole motherboard update to even recognise blu-rays, and considering the price of blank blu-ray discs, that idea went out the window. Downloading or streaming 1080p is not realistic in Australia and won't be for a long while yet. Nor do I care to buy/allocate enough hard drive space to keep soft copies on my computer.

I've also had a lot of scratched burnt DVDs since they're all just stacked in cases of 50.

So I buy now. I figure blu-ray only really started when it buried HD-DVD in 2008, giving it at least 10 years as the standard format from that point. This means building my collection now isn't going to hurt so much 10 years down the track when it may start being superceded.

With the current strength of the Aussie dollar and the deals going on at Amazon, i'm splurging. I think i've got 17 titles on their way to me at the moment.

How much more can home video improve by anyway? I'm of the opinion that you're only fulfilling the potential of a reference-quality blu-ray title with a 42" or 46" screen, MINIMUM. Meaning, if we leap to 4k next, how big does the screen have to be to justify such a resolution? We're talking almost exclusively projectors of at least 150". Is that ever going to be mainstream?

I don't believe home media is going to stop evolving at blu-ray, not for one minute, but even it has been pretty slow to take over from DVD. It's not just disc collections that have to be replaced by most people, it's the whole set up.

Its good to have a conscience about the reality of the Industry for the real Grafters and Creative minds behind Movies, hate to see these people being undermined by the big Buisness Moguls because of Pirating etc.

I also have to be Frugal with purchasing but I tend to like the Second-Hand/lower cost Movies in General...I will splurge for a box-set or something in the more expensive range now and again. If I were to get too cushy with Downloading I't'd cost me too much from the IP that Im with.
Where I live, there used to be a fabulous little Store stocking loads of 'Alternative to Mainstream' DVD's; Cult Horror, Western, Foreign, Vintage Porn, and Vintage Cartoons/kids Movies and it's closed down recently.:(
The prices were fairly reasonable and compared with the bigger stores, which still thrive, they had a better selection acrosss the board.
Call me sentimental but nothing beat walking into that store, soaking up the atmosphere and looking around at the feasts on those Dusty Shelves, now all these places are disappearing.
Think its a good idea to keep a balance about downloading and buying for that reason. We determine what kind of a market thats created for ourselves, in the long run.

I prefer torrents, but I still buy DVDs that I watch a million times over, I buy all my games but.

I'll buy a copy of something if I know I'm gonna watch it again. Other than that... its torrents/usenet for me.

I'm still using a crt tv so maybe when I switch to BR I'll buy more.
