Tinnitus - mega thread

I have tinnitus. I don't really have much advice for you, but I can empathize because it sucks. My aunt (who also has it) swears by Lypoflavanoid, I have some but I never remember to take it consistently so I can't speak to the results. Googling it gets mixed reviews like everything else: some say it works, some say it doesn't.

Ear is doing strange things

I don't have medical insurance, so I cannot see a doctor at this time. That being said, I don't feel like this is a very serious issue, but may become one in the future.

I listen to a lot of loud music all day everyday. Well, my left ear has been making a deep bassy vibrating sound. It was really intense today. It normally
happens when I am laying down and when things get quiet. It is not only a sound, but a vibration that I can feel. It is coming from deep inside my ear and I am pretty sure it is my eardrum.

that is the best way to explain it, which is the problem. Its not a ring, so it is hard to explain.

I was just hoping that someone knew what this was so I could properly diagnose this, or explain to a doctor someday.

ps. this has been going on for years

you have probably damaged your ears with loud music and have probably tinnitus. if you don't stop listening to loud sounds it will get worse.

Seriously man, you need to take care of your ears!!! You only get one pair of ears in your lifetime, and I know you love listening to LOUD music, I do too. But think of how shitty it would be if you damaged your hearing so badly that you couldn't even hear music properly....
If you continue listening to loud music for extensive periods of time every day, you are at VERY real risk of permanently damaging your hearing.

I recently purchased some of these earplugs for when I'm at raves/parties:

You should seriously consider getting some if you are frequently subjected to loud music. They don't dull out any of the actual music, they just reduce the decibels so it doesn't do as much damage to your ears. They are pretty awesome :)
Also, just listen to your music at a lower volume. You can still appreciate the sound at lower volumes so on a day-to-day basis there's no reason to have the volume up so loud.

Seriously though man, don't fuck around when it comes to your hearing. If you love music as much as I do, you wouldn't want to live in a world where you can't hear it anymore. To me, that would be hell on earth. So take care of your ears!!

dang, I am on mobile so I read the text first and wondered who on earth would write such a sweet post. I scooted over to the left and saw the little turtle and then it all made sense.

I sometimes wonder if it is the type of music I listen to. drum and bass is a very loud sound, I noticed. even when I turn the volume down, it is still loud. I will def try and keep it down though.

I also use cue tips a lot to clean my ears out. could that have something to do with it? if so, how can clean my ears out without causing damage?

my ex gf was Japanese and had a little ear spoon that she would use to dig out the wax. graphic I know, sry. anyway she ended up really hurting me once. I wonder if that has something to do with all of this. though.

thank you!

Japanese ear spoon? *vomitsickthrowupeverywhere* Man that was too graphic for this time in the ....hell, any time is too early for that.

Anyway, Neophyte made a great post there, as usual.
I used to try and clean out my ears and it only worsened the problem. I now leave my body to do as it needs and clean itself, with regards to hair, ears, whatever the hell you want. You should stop the cue tips, is what i'm saying. You should never shove them in your ears, ever. Ever. It will continually block your ears and achieve the opposite effect of what you want. The wax serves the same sort of purpose as mucous and by removing it all frequently, you are only serving to put yourself in danger of outside contaminants and infection.

You are going to have to go to your doctors and get your ears syringed. Then have him take a look at it, or potentially get you referred to a Ear, Throat and Nose specialist. You need to be extremely careful when cleaning the ears. They are very sensitive.

yeah bur I didn't think it was socially accepted to have ear wax coming out ur ear either dewd. the ear spoon chick said the excessive wax was the first thing she noticed. maybe she had a fetish with earwax though.

I still have an extra ear spoon if you need to use it. you may want to wash it though cuz its waxy.

I heard u can pour peroxide in your ear but there is some kind of inner voice telling me not to do that. maybe its just my fucked up ear though. . you may want to wash it though cuz its waxy.

Ummmm no dude, do not pour peroxide in your ears!!!

Just, don't.

attempt makes a good suggestion, go to your doctor and get your ears cleaned out professionally.

I know what you mean man, ALL of the music I like to listen to is best served LOUD with extra VOLUME on top.....but honestly, as I said before, we really need to look after our ears, so give them a rest from the volume as much as you can <3

Heyy I just talked to my gramma and she was just at the ear doc today for her ears, and she set me up an appointment. YaY

I had a lengthy reply typed out the other day but my girlfriend's computer decided to eat it, so here it is in summary:

We can only speculate what is going on with your ears, however it is most likely due to playing music too loud. I second the suggestion of ear plugs while at loud events.

Also, as far as the peroxide comments go: Pouring peroxide into your ears is not going to do you any good and could do you further damage. Putting a drop or two, maybe three, of (hydrogen) peroxide into your ears can indeed loosen the wax for removal, though it is best to leave that job up to a professional as Q-tips ("cue tips") should not be put into your ears--There's actually a thread on that kickin' around HL somewhere.

Glad to hear (no pun intended :p) that you're going to see an ear doctor. :)

Dear SS,

When we overuse a muscle, does it not hurt afterward? If we keep overusing that muscle before we allow it to heal, does it eventually cause permanent damage?

Avoid all the drum banging when you can, use earplugs when you can't. It's as simple as that.

UPDATE!!

I havent used any cue tips in one week..NO VIBRATIONS! Not that I have noticed anyways. You were right, the ear needs wax, and if you constantly remove it, it causes problems.

You aren't suppose to use Q-tips the way I use them, anyway. I wait until I get out of the shower or right when I wake up, when it is loose, then dig and get everything.

That being said, I can still keep my ears presentable with a wash cloth.

Hopefully everything stays cool now.

Thanks for the help guys <3%)

That's both excellent and unsurprising! The human body is extremely good at what it needs to do! We clean ourselves, we produce our own oils and waxes and mucous to help clean ourselves, and it works well. When we disrupt that with things like shampoo, conditioner and Q-tips then it can sometimes have nasty effects.

^man, thanks SO much for the help. You and neo really kicked ass in this thread.
fuckkk!!!
