Thoughts on Star Wars the Last Jedi?

I personally thought the last two were better, but this one was just all over the place in terms of plot and badly placed humour, I didn't even fight nodding out during the film.

Sadly, I feel like new Star Wars movies are more of an obligation than a joy at this point. They are expensive and pretty, but ultimately, just too familiar.

I liked pieces of Rian Johnson film, but I was disappointed in how it is continually recycling images (Salt HOTH? Really???!!!). For all his effforts at course correcting JJ-Abram's disgusting nostalgia-recycling, I don't think Johnson went far enough in 'blowing up the Star Wars formula that Disney is content to milk into perpetuity. For all it's inward conversation with itself.

shout out kurt

Rogue One I felt was really good and really Force Awakens was really good at the time. There were some things that were interesting Justin Theroux, Laura Dern, Benicio Del Toro, Snoke...there was a bit of weight with Carrie Fisher being dead and having Mark Hamill back for more screen time was great.

And what in the hell did Yoda say about being a Master Jedi? I thought he was going to say something important but the line seemed off.

But was it Empire Strikes Back? No, not by a long shot. Ill admit the editing was tighter in Last Jedi more than Rogue One. But where was the soundtrack?

I had an idea that maybe what might have been an idea was to do Empire Strikes back in reverse? Last Jedi they do "Hoth" last, there's a bit of mirroring with Luke and Rey on the mountain island, some with Benicio Del Toro as the sort of Lando character.

Overall, I'd say I had more film thoughts with the Ford ad beforehand and thinking I was trapped in some sort of Brave New World rehash, stuck at the feelies, which makes me feel I should probably reread the book.

And in retrospect I think possibly Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith may seem better now with last jedi coming out. Even Phantom Menace

Overall, I'd say Daisy Ridley probably has the most attractive face on the planet, and certain scenes were awesome. Poe's x-wing scene in the beginning. The fight scene with Ben and Rey and Snoke. The fight scene with Finn and Phasma with the closeup, my god put that on a poster.

It was a lot visually to take in and visually stunning. The narrative is a bit weak and lacks a real true badmon. Im not really sure movies will be up to having literally a bad ass nigga in a black helmet taking names.

Finally managed to get to the local IMAX yesterday to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Really really liked it, but on the basis of the first watch I cannot say I loved it. I'm not too worried though as I felt the same after seeing 'The Force Awakens' in IMAX the first time around - too much to take in after waiting 30 years for a Star Wars sequal but after getting the 3DBD upon it's release last Christmas I now love it - despite being one of the few folk who actually like the prequels, I found TFA much more fun than any of them and also preferred it to last years impressive but flawed 'Rogue One'.

A bit too much for me to take in with regards to 'The Last Jedi' which confirmed my one reservation about a film I have otherwise been desperate to see since this time last year - the film-makers, IMO, have over - egged the pudding a bit but there are so many good ideas and moments that the overall experience is extremely satisfying for a life long sad case fan boy. The only question is that they have included so much story one has to ask what is left to tell in 'Episode IX'?

Then, as a final naughty move I have ended my Star Wars centric holiday season (I have spent the last few weeks watching all previous 8 films and 'The Clone Wars' and 'Star Wars Rebels' TV series in chronological order in anticipation of my cinema trip yesterday) by splurging out 50 quid on a copy of 'Battlefront II' for the PS4 which I am about to unwrap and install and test drive with some ganja. Its the closest I will get as an adult to unearthing all my old Kenner toys so please give me a pass on this one. I do want to grow up honestly.

Leaving the theater the first time, I didn’t know what to think. Too much to process. I knew I hated the humor and what happened with Snoke, but besides that I wasn’t sure.

Over the next several days, I was drifting further and further toward hating the movie in general. I sought ought every positive spin on the movie I could, hoping I would change my mind, but I began to see most people who say they loved it were just lying to themselves.

The movie fails on almost every level. Here are a few examples.

The small things: the cringey bad humor taking you out of the movie. I think this is Disney trying to do what they’ve done so well with the newer Marvel films. Problem is, the MCU takes place present day in our world. Star Wars is a long time ago in a galaxy far away. It makes a difference. How did this shit not get cut? No attention to detail.

The medium-sized things: Luke flippantly tossing the light saber over his shoulder. Pole vaulting over the canyon to spear the fish. Milking the tit of that sea cow thing. The cheesy fifth element-esque cgi casino scene. No chemistry between Finn and Rose. The ridiculous Leia scene. The plot holes, the logical inconsistencies, etc.

The big things: Tarnishing the character and legacy of Luke fucking Skywalker. Turning Poe Dameron into an idiot. Wasting Gwendoline Christie for the second time. Saying fuck you to the fans who wanted to know Snokes background. The overall plot of the movie. You have unlimited money and acting talent to write a chapter in the greatest space fantasy of all time. You decide to make it about a spaceship running out of gas and a crazy dude on an island. Ok.

To end on a good note, JJ Abrams is the big winner in all this. All my issues with the Force Awakens seem petty now. Plus he gets to come back for 9 and potentially do something great. Save the new trilogy from being a total disappointment.

And I love Rogue One even more than I did before.

I thought it was pretty decent tho

i was pretty high when i saw it and gave it 7 out of 10 on the night. the next day, i was at about 6 out of 10.

there are 3 or 4 set-piece scenes which were absolutely breathtaking from a cinematography point of view.

Watched it on Showbox and I give it a 7 / 10 also, maybe I am a Startrek kind of guy because those tv shows and movies seemed to entertain me better then Starwars did..
Just glad I didn't spend any money to go and watch it.

7/10 seems really generous based on everything else you said.

Can anyone reading this (who loved TLJ) defend just one thing for me? Not the acting, or humor, or even the dumb Leia scene...just explain to me why the PLOT of the movie lived up to the standard of Star Wars funded by unlimited Disney money and talent.

what I mean is, tell me why a spaceship running out of gas, weirdo Luke Skywalker pole vaulting around an island, and a two-bit, clunky casino scene is sufficient material for one of the greatest sci-fi fantasy epics of all time.

Yeah it's definitely debatable.

There were some pretty great moments in there. The Duel of the Fates scene in episode one, the pod race, the obi-wan anakin fight in episode three, every Palpatine scene (especially the opera scene and his fight with mace Windu), order 66... you know what? I'll go ahead and say Revenge of the Sith is better than the Last Jedi. Once Anakin starts his turn to the dark side Hayden Christensen's acting gets better.

^Ep. III was easily the best prequel, and blows all three of the new films out of the water. Better acting, better plot, and satisfying.

I actually loved rogue one. But I guess the standalone films have a totally different standard.

The UK home video release due this weekend has given me a wonderful excuse to revisit al of the Star Wars media I have in chronological order, including 'The Clone Wars' animated feature and the subsequent TV series. Having never seen any of them before its been great fun to indulge in pure SW shizzle over the past 3 weeks and with the conclusion of all of the episodes I finished off my Easter (and the last of my weekend weed) last night with 'Revenge of the Sith'.

Now I'm ploughing through the first season of 'Rebels' which so far is just as fun as TCW while simultaneously ploughing through 'Catalyst' - a prequal to 'Rogue One' which will be the first film I intend to kick off the weekend with.

Having only seen 'The Last Jedi' once I am fairly confident that I will enjoy it more on a second viewing - I was more than satisfied with the film after seeing it back at Christmas but like many flix of this nature there is bound to be more to digest second time around. I am also pleasantly surprised at the release schedule - although 'The Force Awakens' got a general release 3- 4 months after its cinema run the more comprehensive special edition, which contained the first 3D Blu - Ray copy of the film along with the directors commentary and the like did not go on sale in the UK until late 2016. This time around all home video versions (DVD, BD, 3DBD and digital stream / d/l) are all out at the same time.
