In this thread we show our appreciation of Darren, and all his briliant films. I want to encourage everyone to share appreciation and also add clips, or stills, or lines or whatever memorable or favorite moments from his movies.

His films are at once dark, hopeful, mysterious, true, delusional and revelatory.

I respect and appreciate him, but I didn't like The Fountain. It was the equivalent for me of being stuck in a two hour conversation with an arrogant, pretentious asshole.

^ i agree. fuck The Fountain. requiem bugged me out as a child, don't really care for it at this point in my life. the wrestler was dope. but black swan is going down imo as one of the illest movies evar!

Well see? That's the difference between you and me. Where I disliked the film and stuck to only bashing the film itself, you saw someone with an opinion that is different than yours and chose to bash me. How does it feel to be so much more awesome than me? Don't leave out any details.

i felt that your response was unnecessarily negative and required a rebuttal in similar fashion.

I finally saw Pi for the first time, last night. Whoa. I can see how this film influenced alot of the movies that were made during the 2000s; specifically, the type of ideas that were explored.

The Fountain kicks so much cosmic ass. It was like watching one man's dream of the afterlife.

The Wrestler was one of the most honest and touching movies I've seen, and I thought it ended at the perfect moment (a lot of my friends didn't).

I tried to watch Requiem once but couldn't get through it, just a little too boring and depressing at the same time. I'll have to revisit it someday.

Still waiting for Black Swan to come to town.

On the whole, I would say I'm a fan of Aronofsky. He's one of those directors whose films are unmistakably his own. Plus you gotta give him props for snagging Rachel Weiscz.

i love requiem. i love the fountain. i can watch them both many times before becoming bored.

i'm really looking forward to his take on wolverine. oh and the door is still open for a robocop touch up.

My brother told me Black Swan is amazing. I'll have to check it out.

RFAD has one of the hottest scenes (ass to ass) that wasn't in a porn. Thanks Darren!

The Wrestler was sick too.

Him and Rachel divorced this year...

I respect him as a director but can't say I'm really a fan of his films besides "The Wrestler." While I enjoy his quest to seek out the dark and less traveled paths, I feel he too often goes overboard to make his point.

Case in point: Black Swan. I thought it was a good film but not great. Some of the scenes were so over the top (Winona Ryder Scene - Hospital), that I feel it takes away from the overall film. As someone else said, he has his own niche, and you can identify his films by his directing style.

Also, I think this is a pretty noticeable observation about his films, but figured I'd share:
1) Single parent homes often times. 2) Overbearing or mentally ill mother. 3) Fatherless homes
4) Consistent drug use in nearly all films 5) Obsessive characters (I.E Antagonists) The Fountain - His obsession to find his wife, Requiem - Obsession over drugs, etc.

Tomer

i definitely appreciate the thought provocation that comes from his body of work.

now, see, i think it's interesting - how opinions and perceptions vary from person to person (and i'm not speaking against you in any way) - but i found that scene to be very disturbing, almost unwatchable and not arousing in the least.

Summed up my thoughts exactly, although I am yet to see Black Swan which by all accounts I think I will like so far :)

you took the words right out of my m... hands.

I happen to think The Fountain is one of the most beautiful pieces of art ever made. Here is one of a handful of movies that I can watch with my both my head and my heart, and contemplate in awe, and even cry. I call it "art" because not all movies lend themselves to heavy hermeneutics or semiotic analysis, but this one most definitely does. Add to this the fact that nature was used in place of CGI for special effects, and you can consider my mind blown.

That said, I have been called "pertentious," "arrogant," and an "asshole" (on separate occasions), presumably because I use flowery language in my posts and have a P&S mod tag, so it might be that the film was made specifically for our vile ilk... I dunno, it was a beautiful movie and it made me cry, that's all really.
