Syringes on Plane

Hi, I know there are a few other threads on airport security at the moment but none of them deal with this. If you want to merge this or have me move it, just say.

Anyways, Im heading up to QLD soon, from NSW, and I am wanting to take some syringes up there. I am unsure as to whether or not security or the metal detecors would even find them in my bag, as the amount of metal on them is minimal, but if they did would this cause a fuss. Could they be classed as weapons (hey...forks are) or would they consider them drug paraphenalia (as I would not have, say, insulin with me) and in either of these situations would I just not be able to take them on board or would they like to get the police involved.

If any of you could shed some light on the situation it would be great.

:)

I know my dad must tell them when he takes his medicine kit on the plane as he is a diabetic. He has been caught by the bag scanner before but obviously was allowed to carry them so was let through. According to virgins website you need permission to have them in the cabin so your probably best leaving them in your suitcase or if your travelling light pick some up when you get there.

Safety is our number one priority at Pacific Blue and it is important that we follow safety guidelines. There are many restrictions around what can be carried on board. All sharp instruments are strictly prohibited, including nail scissors, steel manicure nail files, razors, knitting needles, crochet hooks, and syringes (unless certified as required for medical use inflight). These must be packed in luggage for check-in.

Why not just pick up some more once you get to Qld? I mean it's not like they are expensive.

What about the testosterone shots, the single shot ones, with the liquid in the syringe? Would be they able to scan that if it is in the luggage?

I don't think you would have a problem if you put them in your 'carry on/hand luggage'.

Just put them in main luggage (the one that you give them at check-in). I have had scissors and a pocket knife in my main luggage before.

^ Correct - you can pack these items in checked luggage as long as there's no safety risk to baggage handlers or the plane. Make sure they're in a case where no-one can accidentally get a needle stick injury :)

It would be better that you pack them in you luggage that you check in..... they dont care if you have syringes packed away....

Save any hassle or Embarrassment i'd go a Hospital & buy a couple of fit packs from a vending machine?

^ Unfortunately there aren't any vending machines in Qld (yet). But there are stacks of needle and syringe programs around and most pharmacists sell sharps packs. Either way, there's no problem if you pack your needles in your checked-in luggage. It's perfectly legal to possess clean needles and syringes in every state of Australia.

why don't you just get them here there very easy to find in just look in the white pages and there free

lorenzo_benzo, I'd imagine it would be rare that someone would be travelling with such. I have a friend of 35 who was recently in need of testosterone shots, and what his doctor had to do to get them for him was ridiculous (he had a clean history - no drug use, etc).

Although his testosterone levels were dangerously low, he was still required to only receive a limited amount over a period of weeks, and there was no take home.

So unless you've got prescription - in which case I wanna know how you did it ;) - then I'd be very concerned an airport discovery might easily turn into a can of worms.

PS no offence intended if yours is a genuine medical need; p_d

I've flown virgin blue with a syringe in my check in luggage by accident, they never knew (or cared?) definitely don't put it in your hand luggage though.

The way i got it was through my younger brother. Due to his hight (a year ago), the GP recommended he goto a child specialist. After a couple of tests and visits, the doctor wrote up a couple of scripts, which had to be picked up by my dad on the day that of my brothers schedule of getting the shots.

Anyways after 2 visits, they found out my brother didn't need anymore injections and didn't want the shots, so guess whats sitting in the fridge? We had 2 boxes left, I have taken 3, 250 shots (start of the year), in a 2 week period (1 box, and still got 1 left). The funny thing was the doctors never asked what happened with the script 8)...

Pardon my ignorance, but what are the "benefits" of taking testosterone, if you don't actually need it?

Thanks for the explanation lorenzo_benzo, even if somewhat off topic. I guess you've answered your own question regarding testosterone syringes on planes.
