Cops weed out drug-drivers

ONE in 12 motorists was driving under the influence of drugs when a flying squad set up roadside tests in Cairns on Thursday night.

Police said the Roadside Drug Testing Unit and Far Northern officers would target more drug-drivers this weekend.

"It is part of the region's commitment to ensure our roads are rid of impaired drivers," Regional Traffic Co-ordinator Insp Bob Waters said.

"As well as drink-driving, we also target those who may be taking illicit drugs and then driving.

"While drink-driving is given wider publicity, perhaps the hidden menace is drug-driving.

"To that end, we call on our specialist groups, like the Roadside Drug Testing Unit, to assist us in targeted enforcement."

Insp Waters said people who thought they could take drugs and drive should think again.

"People may think if they take drugs they will escape the net, but we are very aware of illicit drugs and will do everything to get these people off our roads," he said.

Police figures released to The Weekend Post yesterday showed 16,477 roadside drug tests had been carried out in Queensland since December 1, 2007, with 346 positive tests at a ratio of one positive test for every 47 drivers.

During the unit's seven previous visits to Cairns, 30 positive tests have been recorded, while three positive readings were recorded from 35 tests on Thursday night at a ratio of one in 12.

Roadside Drug Testing Unit officer-in-charge Sen-Sgt Richard Teale said specific drugs were being targeted.

"Put simply, we test for cannabis, speed and ecstasy," he said.

"Essentially those three drugs present a risk to a motorist and they can affect their driving."

The roadside unit will stay in the Far North for the weekend.

So its ok to drive on LSD then? lol geez there dumb

I don't advocate driving while intoxicated on drugs, but it seems to me the 3 they test for are some of the safer drugs to drive on. Marijuana makes you real paranoid and you don't take stupid risks, and most people driving stoned are probably everyday smokers in which case marijuana does very little to impair them.

I find it curious how fighter pilots can be given methamphetamines but then we are supposed to believe people driving on them are a big risk on the roads. Amphetamines increase alertness and while I can see the argument that they may cause some wreckless behaviour on the road, I would wager it is a lot less than alcohol.

I think the drugs that are real dangers on the roads are CNS depressants like GHB, heroin, strong benzo's, opiates, etc. but they don't bother testing for these. What kind of retarded policy is this? Psychedelics would also be very dangerous but the amount of psych users is minimal and most of them wouldn't dream of driving on psychedelics so I can see why it is pointless to test for them.

If they are serious about reducing the dangers caused by drug driving they will test for depressants and not stimulants and marijuana.

lol, LSD is VERY VERY hard to test for, costs alot of money and takes up alot of lab time, its not something that they can test for on the street

but still, I think that if the office in charge can't tell that they are under the influence of a mind altering substance that they should be allowed to drive because it obviously isn't affecting their ability to drive

still the cops are assf*cks and would still arrest people on suspicion but still.....

Reminds me last nite when there were 2 cops on the dancefloor in the club i was. Donno what the hell they were doing there.

man i am a cairns raver from way back, wonder if we ever met warpedmind, or if you know anyone from the crew I use to hang with....

but yeah, it often use to rare its head infront of popular raves...

I drove through this on the Friday night at about 8pm. Had just been to subway on Cnr of Captain Cook & Lily St, the drug test van was set up on one of the back streets out there. Why the hell would they set it up out there. there was nothing on and nobody around.

Testing for amphetamines and marijuana is a joke, especially speed. I am so much more of a risk when IM NOT on the goey. On the go I'm so much more focused and alert, normally I'm off in daydream land.
