Opioids Poppy plants

Does anyone know if it's legal to grow poppies (the flower) in NY state? Obviously I'm hoping to harvest a few pods but I wouldn't plant a huge field or anything, just that I've been given a garden space to work with in our new, much bigger backyard and was thinking of growing poppies along with some other flowers and edible herbs (NOT WEED! Stuff like basil etc) the flowers themselves are nice and if I get a few pods out of the deal it's just icing on the cake...just thought I would ask if anyone knew

Officially, no, cultivation of any P. somniferum is illegal. But in effect you can grow opium poppy as long as you aren't consuming them.

Most home grown poppies are going to be underwhelming.

I don't want to get in any legal trouble so maybe I shouldn't plant them. They're pretty though! Too bad.
