Opioids Opioids from Pain Management Dr. If I have my medical marijuana card?

If I have a medical marijuana card, will I not be able to get pain meds from a pain management Dr?

I've called around to pain management doctor's for my nerve pain in my back. I had one of the pain management doctor's offices call me back when I was calling around to schedule my appointment and she said "I see you have you medical marijuana card" and I told her it was for my insomnia and lower back spasms (separate back pain than I was seeing them for) and she told me she could schedule me with a Dr, but there is no guarantee I'll get meds because of that... I don't know if it was just THAT doctor's office or if it's a real thing.

I live in AZ, if this matters.

I'll happily give up smoking at night if it means I can get relief if my constant pain.

Cheers!

As a background. I've been going to my (long standing) primary care doctor for a month about my crippling nerve pain in my back and they've given me Gabapentin and Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen (3 different doses because I've had to keep going in and telling them they aren't cutting it, on our weekly follow-up visits - she first put me on 5/325, then 7.5/325 and now 10/325). She mentioned thinking of switching me to oxycodone to try that, but didn't want to switch up by scripts too much since I was about to see a pain management doctor (that she referred me to, since my primary care doctor doesn't do prior authorizations for opioid meds).

Any and all information is welcome.
Cheers!

If your pain doc drug tests which he likely does. Indication that you use weed in the results will great redice your chances of getting a good opioid script. You will probably be cutoff for testing positive

I think that it would depend on the protocol of the individual practice and the doctor themselves. I have a friend in pain management who smokes weed but doesn't have her med card. They do test her every so often and nothing became of it. Then again, they only give her a minimal amount of hydrocodone and gabapentin. They will let you know when you fill out the admissions forms and sign the pain contract (they ought to at least) Wish you luck!

This, completely and utterly. Nobody here is going to be able to tell you one way or another what one provider will do differently than another. It's really only something that you can figure out by putting in the time and making appointments with said providers. With that being said, there is really nothing in this thread that would lend itself to appropriate OD discourse. I actually don't think you're trying to do this OP, but the answers that you will end up with could easily border upon content similar to Doctor Shopping advice, which is a mortal sin here on BL.

What do my brethren think about this? I'm not the OD sensei, so please stop me if you don't think I should close it, but it seems pretty clear-cut to me.

It was not my intent to make this a controversial topic. I'm just in so much pain, it makes me even more impatient than I already am.

I am simply wondering if this is a common thing: pain management doctor's not giving meds because of a medical marijuana card or if it was just that doctor's office.

I have an appointment with a pain doctor on the 11th, so we'll see how that goes. It's just, like I said, I'm a little impatient right now and was hoping someone would have some knowledge on the subject.

Thanks!

I should also add that pain meds are completely new to me. Before this nerve pain in my back, the only thing I'd ever had was Tylenol 3 for tooth pain. So I apologize if my question seems ignorant, because I AM ignorant to this all.

Thanks!

I forgot to mention this earlier: I can't speak for the marijuana issue but I've never been to a pain management doctor who didn't require an MRI.

Same Here. Mri First is important. As it was for me. The pain specialist will probs be an anesthetist.

Theres no guarentee he will prescribe you anything without input from specialists. If he prescibes you drugs and or alternate therapies. It would probs be based on diagnosis and input from other specialists. Neurologist mostly. Your doc should have perhaps referred u to neurologist first. For Mri, full blood test and possibly lumbar puncture. Since you nerve pain is in a specific region they might be able to anesthetise the local site of the pain at regular intervals and avoid opiates altogether.

Might be different where you live. But that's the way it works here in the UK.

I hope your pain issue is resolved or under better control asap.

Best of luck :)
