Whiff of $300,000 in cannabis
By Les Kennedy
July 14, 2005

A police drug sniffer dog on a routine sweep of Sydney's domestic airport has uncovered 10 kilograms of cannabis in a passenger's luggage.

Police involved in yesterday's early-morning operation allegedly found the cannabis, which has an estimated street value of $300,000, in vacuum-sealed plastic bags inside a travel bag.

Police said the cannabis was in the luggage of a man who had arrived on a Virgin Blue flight from Adelaide.

The alleged courier, a 36-year-old man from Kingsford, was detained when he collected the bag from the baggage carousel.

He was charged late yesterday with supplying an indictable quantity of a prohibited drug and possession of a prohibited drug.

He was refused bail and will appear before Waverley Local Court today.

It is the second arrest in five weeks related to drugs being allegedly transported through Sydney's domestic airport.

On June 9 detectives arrested a Qantas domestic baggage handler, Raymond Camilleri, 40, and charged him in connection with 246 grams of cocaine, with a street value of $60,000, flown to Melbourne airport.

Police alleged Camilleri tipped off the courier to the fact his bag had been intercepted by police.

The arrests appear to support the failed defence claim by Schapelle Corby, convicted in Bali for marijuana importation, that the drug could have been put in her boogie-board case when she flew from Brisbane to Sydney to catch her Bali flight.

The arrest of Camilleri, who has been charged with hindering a police investigation, came out of a covert surveillance operation in February on the Rose Bay home of businessman Kyran Frederick Terry, 37, according to a police statement of facts tendered before Central Local Court.

A MAN allegedly caught trying to smuggle 13kg of cannabis through Sydney's domestic air terminal was arrested during a police operation targeting inter-city drug trafficking, a court has heard.
Hoang Chilong, 48, of Kingsford, in eastern Sydney, was arrested at Sydney airport yesterday after arriving on a flight from Adelaide.

Police allege Mr Chilong was carrying $300,000 worth of cannabis in 26 vacuum-sealed plastic bags within his luggage.

Mr Chilong faced Waverley Local Court today, charged with supplying an indictable quantity of a prohibited drug.

According to a New South Wales Police statement of facts tendered to the court, he was arrested during Operation Flora.

"The purpose of this operation was to target the transportation of prohibited drugs between cities via the domestic airline system," the statement said.

Police removed Mr Chilong's suitcase from a Virgin Blue flight when it arrived at Sydney, for inspection by a police drug sniffer dog, the statement said.

The bag was then allowed to continue through to the terminal, where police watched Mr Chilong inspect and collect it.

The disabled pensioner, who arrived in Australia in 1985 as a refugee from Laos, was arrested on his way out of the terminal.

A luggage tag attached to the suitcase containing the cannabis included the name of the accused, the statement said.

Mr Chilong was also found in possession of a Virgin Blue ticket and a key that opened the lock to the suitcase.

Magistrate Jayeann Carney said the case against Mr Chilong was overwhelming.

She refused him bail and adjourned the matter to the same court on July 20.

Your original story quoted the guy as being 36, carrying 10kg of herb and supplied a different court date. How can anyone trust the fucking media?

^^Yeah, I know. They add everyone down the chain and tack it on. Still very rediculous though.

rediculous yes, but its how they get the judge to set an insainly high bail if at all.

The media are dogs, you cannot trust them, someone throws them a peice of information and they tear it apart before it can be understtod by anyone.
