Australian faces drug execution
Les Kennedy, Craig Skehan
March 1 2002

A 46-year-old Australian woman faces a mandatory death sentence after being arrested in Malaysia, allegedly carrying three kilograms of heroin.
The Melbourne woman, who was detained on Wednesday at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, has dual Australian and Yugoslav passports in the name of Gordana Parezanovic.
She appeared briefly yesterday before a magistrate in Sepang where she was remanded in custody for 14 days.
Under Malaysian law, anyone convicted of possessing more than 15 grams of heroin or 200 grams of cannabis faces mandatory death by hanging.
If convicted, she will be the fourth Australian to face the death penalty in Malaysia...

Hmm... here's an article about the same story from the Herald-Sun.
http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,3865745%255E2862,00.html
Interesting to note the differences in language used to report the article:
The Age
States the woman carried: 6 'packets' of heroin.
The purity: 'quite high'.
The total weight: 'three kilograms of heroin'.
The value: 'street value of hundreds of thousands of dollars'.
The sentence: 'mandatory death by hanging'.
The Herald-Sun
States the woman carried: 6 'slabs' of heroin.
The purity: 'pure heroin', 'heroin base'.
The total weight: no actual weight given - 'would have produced eight kilograms of street-level deals'.
The value: 'about $20 million'.
The sentence: 'Police said she would be charged either with possession of drugs in transit, which carries a five-year sentence, or general trafficking, which may carry the death penalty.'
Funny how hearing the same story from different sources changes the level of impact.

many journalists don't realise the impact of their wording when it comes to such things...

many journos realise the effect, and do it anyway. The 'regurgitators' then wow their colleagues at the watercooler and cheap advertising is theirs.

you have got to be kidding. That's akin to saying world leaders don't understand the consequences of their policy decisions.
At least you guys are lucky enough to have a choice of papers in your town. We just get quasi-right wing bullshit and a weekend feature articles that tout Dr Shuglin as "dr death", and tell parents that ecstacy can be made in teenager's bedrooms.
We had an article last week that screamed "Teenagers head to prescription drugs to ease stress". The story was based around figures that said too many children use stronger versions of PANADOL/PARACETEMOL (not prescription drugs) than they need. It cited the death of a 13yo by paracetemol poisioning as evidence. It mentioned at the end of the article the boy was recovering from liver surgery. Hardly an epidemic of prescription drug abuse. Maybe the journo's didn't realise the effect of those words?

Bit late, but what a fucked country! Hanging is fucked enough for anything. Primitive fucking shit.

Wait up.
Yesterday the US executed a woman named Lynda Block by electric chair. This is despite the US Supreme Court having declared the electric chair unconstitutionally cruel.
Sounds just as primitive to me. What a fucked country!
Oh, the US also executes more people than any other country in the world except for China which has a population of 1.3 billion people, something like 5 or 6 times that of the US.
If you're going to criticise one, criticise all.

I’m still astonished that the Herald Sun is using words that have more than three syllables. What next? Their front page won’t revolve around football and the logies?

Macksta: I agree with you. America is fucked.
Australia is good, just fucked drug laws :p

Assuming it was done properly, I'd rather be hung than get the chair.
