Tradesmen contracted to complete maintenance work at Victoria's Fulham Prison are facing possible drugs charges after drugs and syringes were found stashed in one of their cars.
The drugs were found by sniffer dogs patrolling the prison car park last week as the men were completing a three-day job at Fulham.
Cannabis, caps of heroin, 19 syringes and other drug paraphernalia were uncovered in the back of a utility.
A spokesman for Corrections Commissioner Kelvin Anderson confirmed the find yesterday, but rejected suggestions the contractors were dealing or supplying drugs to prisoners.
He said that it appeared the men had checked out of their motel, packing their personal possessions - including the drugs - into their cars, where they were detected.
"This is another example of our barrier controls working really well," the spokesman said.
"There is no evidence to suggest they were dealing with prisoners. A small amount of marijuana, a small quantity of other drugs, syringes and drug paraphernalia (were) found in the back of a contractor's ute."
He said the sniffer dogs used to identify drugs routinely patrolled the prison car park. There were sufficiently sensitive to locate quantities of cannabis left in ashtrays.
The spokesman said the matter had been referred to police.
