Ban party pills - Mother's plea as son fights for life

By Jarrod Booker

A mother whose son is fighting for his life after taking party pills wants to see them banned.

Ben Rodden, 23, became seriously ill after taking Torque, a brand of party pills available over the counter, to keep him alert while he was deejaying at an all-night weekend rave in Greymouth.

About 3am on Sunday he started shaking and sweating uncontrollably and "quickly went downhill".

"I don't know how many he took. Only he knows that," said his mother, Wendy Rodden. "I just think they should be banned. But what happens then? They go underground? They are just not good for the kids."

Mr Rodden remained in an induced coma yesterday in Christchurch Hospital's intensive care unit, after being flown from Greymouth. He may have permanent damage to his liver and kidneys.

The controversial party pill ingredient benzylpiperazine (BZP) was found in his system, as was caffeine. It is unclear if he took anything else, but his mother said doctors at Christchurch Hospital did not find alcohol in his system.

"They say he is young and he can heal. We have just got to wait and see," Mrs Rodden said.

"It's very traumatic. His brothers are taking it very hard. It's tough for the extended family as well - they are all gutted."

The chairman of the ministerial committee on drugs, Jim Anderton, said several studies and reports from New Zealand health researchers outlined the "real and potential harm" caused by party pills containing BZP.

"While there have been no recorded deaths attributed solely to the use of BZP, we know that severe adverse effects from the use of party pills occur unpredictably and that the seizures which have been recorded have the potential to kill. Everyone should know that."

Professor Mike Ardagh, a specialist at Christchurch Hospital's emergency department, said the hospital saw regular cases of people unwell after taking party pills.

Symptoms ranged from agitation and paranoia to seizures and even more serious results such as that suffered by Mr Rodden.

The Social Tonics Association (Stanz), which represents the party pill industry, said a ban was the wrong approach.

Stanz has suggested regulations and a safety code to govern the manufacture, sale and use of party pills. These included a restriction on the amount of BZP in a tablet, and a requirement for health warnings on packaging.

"Prohibition has never worked, not in any country and not at any time, and will not work in New Zealand either," said Stanz chairman Matt Bowden. "It will simply deliver the market to the gangs, and to hard drugs like P.

"BZP was designed as a stimulant which, unlike P, is not addictive and does not provoke violent or criminal behaviour."

National MP Jacqui Dean said Mr Anderton was sitting on his hands.

"Here we have a young man on life support, while worried doctors in Christchurch are watching rising numbers of party pill users end up in hospital. What is it going to take for the minister to act?"

Ban moves

* The Expert Advisory Committee on Drugs has recommended the Government make common ingredients in party pills, such BZP, phenylpiperazines and related piperazines, illegal because of the risk of harm.

* The matter is open to the public to comment on until next month.

Theyre the purple pills, and on the pack says only to take 1 then if need of another then a few hours later, theyre decently strong, theres 4 in a pack, also said he was drinking alcohol. Oh well.. Saw it on the telly last night.

LMAO!! just saw the 6pm news and doctors were saying he was on several drugs, also people were saying he had taken legal and illegal drugs that night. I mean he shouldve known better that they WILL test him, heh...

edit v1.0: The mother also stated that her son 'may have' taken another pill 'similiar' to the effects of ecstacy. I doubt they+media will publicise the toxicology report as this will scrutinise the prohibition of bzp with deadline being march, interesting to say the least.

Well the funny part was his parents were saying how evil bzp pills are and should be banned right away, so not to cause mass chaos blah blah.. Even the brother admitted to taking them with him, but it didnt take a rocket scientist to read his body language on national tv 8). The real situation was he/they? had taken a combo of legal+illegal drugs that night, but to blame bzp entirely on its own. Manipulation+media at its best :\

I don't think he would have expected, when he was supposedly taking a combination of these substances, that he would end up in an induced coma with doctors testing his blood.

Hopefully information will be released about the combination of substances that he consumed.

Any drug use has its risks but these risks are compounded when it becomes poly drug use, licit or illicit.

Yeah, it probably won't matter what other drugs he had in him though, people will blame the party pills anyway.

This man got hit by a car!
Ban the party pills!

I would like to see some news reports on drink driving and drunkin violence.

But then that would be one really thick news paper. .)

And while they're at it they can ban cigarettes and alcohol.

Or they could take a more intelligent approach.

Sense and sensibility...

Unfortunately, the media attention on Ben's plight gives more fodder to the anti party pills brigade and the reality is that Ben has been fighting for his life in hospital. For our town (Ben's hometown of Greymouth, NZ), this is a tragedy because one young man, well-known to many of us and a friend of Ben's, died a week before Christmas. Toxicology results have not been released to the family but it is likely that he died for the same reason that Ben is now in a critical condition.

No - one young person who had an adverse reaction is not going to spoil your fun, but should give you food for thought about judicious use of party pills; Yes - it's well documented that these pills don't take the same lethal toll as alcohol, tobacco and other more harmful drugs; Yes - the media and political leaders are USING this family to spread the word about the evil nasties available to our kids and win a few more votes and that is just wrong; Yes - at the end of the day it comes down to an individuals choice - we all have free will and the ability to choose for ourselves; and No - young people aren't ten feet tall and bullet proof. Take it easy out there peeps and take good care of your friends and whatever your opinions are, send good vibes to Ben, he needs it.

^
Right on! my condolences for your other friend who passed away, and your right, it is wrong to use Bens unfortunate situation to promote someone elses political vote! Im sure if Ben and your friends were members of BL they would be more well informed of harm reduction, do your part by spreading those words. Take care+prosper!

yeah.

what would be nice is a bit of honesty on the behalf of everyone, from everyone. even though i enjoy the workout im sick of having to read peoples lies to get to the truth, it should be totally fuked but this is the reality. how about some real fuken education for us kids?

Sort of understand what your saying, but not quite... Well that part anyway ->how about some real fuken education for us kids? please explain.

Hard to say mate, he was drinking alcohol beforehand, which is clearly displayed on the packet not to, his mother is uncertain how many he took. And he had taken illegal drugs as well/cocktail. A shame he didnt know about harm reduction or at least the risks involved. The other poster stated the dj was friends to another guy that died in december on what could be similiar circumstances? makes you think. Just hope he pulls through.

what the hell is this world coming to?? 23 year old nightclub DJ's should definately not be taking anything considered healthy and or safe... damn this yonger generation and their foolishness

but seriously... i wonder if he hadn't taken the legal drug, would he have been fine? not that it would 'mean' anything, it'd just be fun :)

The plot thickens!

Illegal drugs found in party pills
The line between legal party pills and illicit drugs is becoming increasingly blurred.

Illegal drugs were found in some party pills sent for ESR analysis.

Police National Crime Manager, Detective Superintendent Win van der Velde, is also worried that many party pills look very similar to banned ecstasy pills and have similar logos and marketing material.

He says there have been recent cases of people taking party pills without having any idea what is in them, and they have become seriously ill as a result.

Eight days ago West Coast man Ben Rodden took what is believed to have been party pills. He remains in a coma in Christchurch Hospital, and in another incident, Levin police are dealing with a homicide inquiry after a man collapsed and died last week after taking an unknown substance.

Rodden's liver is healing but he has now developed lung problems. His parents still do not know what he took.

ESR tests have found BZP - the ingredient in legal shop-sold pills - is now being added to ecstasy tablets sold on the black market, which is a potentially dangerous cocktail.

"We're finding that ecstasy tablets are containing real mixtures of drugs and other active substances," Keith Bedford of ESR says.

"Two of the most common types of ecstasy tablets currently contain MDMA plus methamphetamine, which is the same as P."

Police say it is now more important than ever not to accept drugs without knowing where they have come from. While there is concern that pills sold at raves and on the party scene may be illegal and potentially lethal, there are no issues with pills sold in shops.

How about they do something constructive and post those 'mdma+bzp pills' on pillreports.

Its hard to say, alcohol kills more people here and they have evidence+statistics for that. As for the suppliers theyve been giving freebies out ever since the craze started 6 years ago.

It looks like they're on borrowed time for sure, especially now with this report ^^ as well as the poor guy now on life support.

A certain NZ supplier of piperazine powders is now often giving quite generous freebies which would suggest they sense they've only got a few months left at most to sell things like BZP, TFMPP, MEOPP, and MCPP.

Somehow, I just can't see it lasting much longer. There are too many risks, for sure. It's a shame, though.

It would certainly make for an interesting "social experiment" if they are banned. The market for illicits would be huge, with syndicates likely to pounce on such a lucrative opportunity to fill any market void.

Unfortunately for NZ party people it would also likely increase casualties from a wider variety of recreational substances, so I'd very much doubt that removing these products from the market would reduce drug related hospital admissions.

Completely the wrong end of the stick - BZP found in "ecstasy" tablets, not ectasy found in party pills. Morons.

re: phase_dancer: what will happen when these drugs are made illegal? Right now, manufacturers will be stocking up on BZP. They'll press it into pills, and sell it as ecstasy. Net result? We'll be taking unknown doses of BZP possiblely mixed with other drugs, and paying maybe two or three times what we currently pay for legal BZP.
