MORE than 20,000 South Australians cried out for help with drug and alcohol addiction last year, the latest figures show.

MORE than 20,000 South Australians cried out for help with drug and alcohol addiction last year, the latest figures show.

About 1000 more people called the state's Alcohol and Drug Information Service in 2007 than in 2006. March was the busiest month, with 2118 calls.

Associate Professor Robert Ali, clinical services director of Drug and Alcohol Services SA, said that things often "came to a head" over February and March, in the fallout from Christmas and New Year's Eve.

"At the coalface, that's been a repeated picture year on year," he said.

"There's also a peak around the winter months when it's getting colder.

"That forces people to seek shelter and seek help."

Professor Ali said people phoned the information service for help with a range of substances.

"Alcohol continues to be our predominant reason for people seeking care," he said.

"Most common drugs are heroin, cannabis and methamphetamine, and after that is ecstasy. People are often calling for treatment advice for heroin and increasingly methamphetamine."

20,000 is not that many specially that it includes alcohol which i would think would be at least 75% of those.
