Abbott to investigate mouthwash abuse
May 02, 2007 11:11am

HEALTH Minister Tony Abbott is seeking further evidence that some indigenous people in Alice Springs are now abusing mouthwash because of its alcoholic content.

Alice Springs Council mayor Fran Kilgariff said yesterday there was anecdotal evidence of the new form of substance abuse.

"Our outdoor workers are reporting they're picking up a lot more empty Listerine bottles when they do litter collection,'' Ms Kilgariff said.

Her comments were backed by youth worker Blair McFarland.

He said there was concern the problem may "fall through the gaps''.

"It's a question of who would formulate the response.''

There are already strict controls on access to beer and wine in Alice Springs, as well as inhalants, paint and petrol which have all been abused in the past.

Today, Mr Abbott's spokeswoman said the minister had asked departmental officials in Alice Springs to investigate the reports.

"We asked for advice from officials on the ground,'' the spokeswoman said.

She said Mr Abbott had also asked the Northern Territory Government to help investigate the reports.

Yesterday the spokeswoman had said Mr Abbott would need more than anecdotal evidence to comment.

This is what would happen if you miraculously eliminated drugs from society. People want to get high, they always have and always will.

Just give em some lady maryjuana, who the fuck cares, its ten times better than the shit their putting into their bodies now :)

Maybe the govt should try looking into the reasons that so many indigenous australians have drug problems in the first place rather than banning every single thing that they can get high from.

^^^ the government even if they tried would not be able to fix the drug problems the aboriginals have. Only if they tried help themselves would they make any progress. They cant blame everything on 'the white man', they have been equally destructive to their culture as outside forces.

Agreed. You can't change someone if they are just too lazy to do anything about their situation and blame everyone else for it.

At least its not like NZ, the streetpeople here walk around with methylated spirits mixed with cocacola. Mind you have heard of desperate alcoholics in rehab drinking perfume and such.
