Abbott to investigate mouthwash abuse
May 02, 2007 11:11am
HEALTH Minister Tony Abbott is seeking further evidence that some indigenous people in Alice Springs are now abusing mouthwash because of its alcoholic content.
Alice Springs Council mayor Fran Kilgariff said yesterday there was anecdotal evidence of the new form of substance abuse.
"Our outdoor workers are reporting they're picking up a lot more empty Listerine bottles when they do litter collection,'' Ms Kilgariff said.
Her comments were backed by youth worker Blair McFarland.
He said there was concern the problem may "fall through the gaps''.
"It's a question of who would formulate the response.''
There are already strict controls on access to beer and wine in Alice Springs, as well as inhalants, paint and petrol which have all been abused in the past.
Today, Mr Abbott's spokeswoman said the minister had asked departmental officials in Alice Springs to investigate the reports.
"We asked for advice from officials on the ground,'' the spokeswoman said.
She said Mr Abbott had also asked the Northern Territory Government to help investigate the reports.
Yesterday the spokeswoman had said Mr Abbott would need more than anecdotal evidence to comment.
