Six officers in charge of the North Korean freighter Pong Su were sent to trial today on drug smuggling charges relating to a $165 million heroin haul seized last April.
But the 27 crew members, who were seized with the ship at sea and have been in custody for almost a year, are to be released.
In Melbourne Magistrates Court today, magistrate Duncan Reynolds said there was insufficient evidence to obtain convictions in the case of the crew members and that they would be discharged.
The crew of the Pong Su was arrested last April after 125 kilograms of heroin was discovered off Victoria's south-west coast near Lorne in April last year.
The six men were remanded, with any possible bail conditions yet to be decided, to face a hearing in the Victorian County Court on April 30
