NEWS - Drug tests coming to NSW roads

Question? If you are found to have a positive test to say Amphetemines, can the police then go and search your car and try and make a hero out of themeselves?

Hopefully the authorities pick up on at least some of the flaws raised here and realise that this idea is far from pragmatic.

yep. all thats needed is reasonable suspicion.

Drivers and drugs

Your article ("Roadside drug test trap for legal users", Herald, April 19) quite rightly highlights the problem of determining whether the drug actually influences a driver's performance in a negative fashion.

It is well known, for instance, that amphetamines are detectable for up to four or five days after use. Just because residual low levels of a substance exist in a person's blood does not mean that the person is presently affected by it - he or she is no longer "high".

The case is even larger for cannabis, detectable for some weeks after use. Is it reasonable to convict someone - potentially ruining that person's job and life - of driving under the influence when it is not so?

It's the same as what he posted above. Well done VelocideX! :)

its not farkiN! they changed "when they are in fact not" to "when it is not so"... how hungry are they to save words! geez :p

they're out to analyse your saliva, nto the cells in your mouth.

True, but I would imagine despite the levels detectable with these tests, a simple mouth wash just prior to a swab could all but eliminate the evidence, where as a good swab around the submandibular gland would get a fresh secretion. I guess we'll see what happens.

on the letter VelocideX.

So is there any truth about washing your mouth out with vinegar? Or is there any other way/ information on how a positive test could be negated?

I guess it would with one of those paddle pop sticks. But if they get the swab around in the submandibular gland, no mouthwash would help. But they would have to open your mouth, hold it open and fuck around with your mouth for a good 10 seconds which is a pretty big ask for the whole public.

I want to know exactly what procedure they are trialing in Vic.

Fuck this could turn very heavy... Lets just hope it is 2 complicated for the authorities to organise and refine such tests.

Velocidex: Rockin' letter man.. fucken top work.

If you have MDMA in your system just say your drink was spiked a couple of nights ago and you failed to report it.

What happens if someone couldn't open thier mouth for some reason. Like they had a broken jaw and it would be to uncomftable to keep your mouth open for a prolonged time.

I saw a news report about this topic on late-night tv last week...

They showed a test being carried out by one of the chief of Victorian police. He inserted a spoon shaped part of the device into the test subjects mouth and about ten seconds later it was pulled out. The device was then opened up about 5 minutes later and a result could be obtained.

Apparently the tests only flaw is that it will only be useful in picking up grass and amphetamine based drugs such as speed but not pure MDMA.

Not sure why "pure MDMA" wouldn't show up, but that's all the report said. Only problem is that if this is true, how many "pure MDMA" pills have any of you ever seen !? ;)

^^ maybe this will be an incentive for producers to start producing mdma only pills... if they know everyone will get drug-tested on the way home, people are much less likely to take drugs...
make MDMA only pills and no problem? hmm

^Nice thought ! It would be a good thing if "MDMA" pills start to contain just MDMA all the time !!! :)
