Date-rape drug seizure stopped many sexual assaults, police say

Police believe they have potentially prevented many sexual assaults after WA’s biggest seizure of the date rape and party drug fantasy at the weekend.

Officers from the organised crime squad found 1.6 litres of fantasy, or GHB, at a Duncraig house on Saturday and have charged a 34-year-old man with possession of the drug with intent to sell or supply.

Police searched the house and charged the man, a nightclub sound and lighting engineer, soon after he flew to Perth from Broome. He is due to appear in court on January 22.

Det-Sen. Sgt Paul McMurtrie said police would allege the man intended to sell the drug for use at New Year’s Eve celebrations at Northbridge nightclubs.

“It’s a drug of choice in the nightclub and rave scene and the drug has also been linked to incidents of date rape,” he said.

“By taking this drug off the street during the festive season, we believe that we may have averted the opportunity for date rape to occur.”

The drug has been linked to the death of Brisbane mother Diane Brimble on a cruise ship in 2002.

Police say a raid at a Perth house last week uncovered the largest quantity of date-rape drug GHB ever seized in Western Australia.

They say the 1.6 litres of the designer drug, also known as fantasy, was destined for New Year's Eve celebrations in Northbridge.

A 34-year-old man has been charged over the Duncraig haul and is due to appear in court later this month.

Senior Sergeant Paul McMurtrie says the seizure may have prevented sexual assaults and even deaths over the festive season.

"In quantities of up to four millilitres, it can anaesthetise people and render them unconscious and in quantities of up to eight mils and more, can actually cause a person's death," he said.

He says police estimate there was enough of the drug for about 800 individual doses.

It is a particularly rare drug in WA from my understanding.

And the picture in the paper appears to be a liquid in a bottle from a chemical supply company, so it is 1,4-BD, or more likely, GBL.

Clear glass bottles all of the same type with white labels and typed writing, with large purple plastic screwtops lids.

I have just realised this is actually probably just evidence bottles used by the police. These bottles are all in sealed bags in the photo. So what has probably happened is the liquid was found in another container, and then transferred into secure police evidence containers for sending off to get tested. All containers are about 2/3 full with approximately the same amount in them which would be unusual if not measured out this way by the police.

So ignore what I said as this scenario seems more probable.

Amazing, "a drug of choice", as opposed to drugs of duress? So essentially what he is saying is that, it is a drug, that some people choose to take, in "raves and nightclubs" and also by extension, some other people choose to take it elsewhere.

Essentially they think that they maybe stopped there being the opportunity for date rape to occur... maybe.

Sorry about the sarcasm but this is so meaningless. Det-Sen. Sgt Paul McMurtrie is either a fool who doesn't realize that everything he said is effectively without any logical conclusion or he realizes this and is saying it for some other end, which would be deceitful.

Funny they didnt call it liquid ecstacy like they would have a few months ago - that would have confused people now after the other busts of MDP2P which were incorrectly reported as Liquid E.

Would have been hilarious for people to confuse the two and compare reports of seizures in Vic 340 Litres, NSW 1900 Litres, WA 1.6 Litres biggest ever!

There is research to show that people use GHB more in private locations than public locations so that whole "drug of choice in the dance scene" thing is just crap. I'm sure people do use it in those scenes, but I just hate it when 'tards make sweeping statements like that.

you know the vast majority of people whom consume it don't do it just to rape others.
