Charged after 3kg cocaine seizure

AN American man has been charged with importing $4 million worth of cocaine after Customs officers in Perth allegedly found the haul in his suitcase.

Tesalimi Matti, 29, made a brief appearance in Perth Magistrates Court today after being charged with importing a prohibited substance into Australia.
He could face a life jail term and a $750,000 fine if convicted.

Customs officials today displayed the 2kg packet of cocaine allegedly found hidden in the lining of the man's suitcase after he arrived at Perth International Airport on a flight from Dubai yesterday.

Magistrate Barbara Lane was told Mr Matti had travelled from Atlanta to Ghana and then to Nigeria before boarding the final flight in Dubai.

The Dubai flight landed in Western Australia about 3.40pm (AEST).

The court heard the man had been travelling on a US passport, and underwent a baggage check when he arrived in Perth.

George Grace, the director of WA Customs border intelligence and passengers, said outside the court the alleged drug haul had a street value of about $4 million.

Mr Matti made no application for bail and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on June 8.

What is with so many seizures and stuff lately, either i never really listened before or lately there have been a lot of big things happening... the guys in syd where they dug up $1 million (i think) who were planning to bring over lots of coke, then this and also all the eccies its so depressing, just hoping it all gets back on the street soobner rather than later

man ive been noticing WAY more busts in the news the past few months. heaps man. and i have watched the evening news almost every day for years. so yeah. they must be busting more. or telling more people about it than they used to.

Maybe there's just more drugs coming in now... if they bust 5% of shipments and the number of shipments goes up by 100 times this year compared to last year, you see 100 TIMES AS MANY DRUG BUSTS IN 2005 THAN 2004! Obviously they're winning the drug war =)

yer thats the way i see it too a, ther only makin more drug busts because demand for drugz is rising soo much that more drugz are coming into the country.not because they are becoming more efficient at finding them.

For several years coke has been a very expensive heavily cut drug - no wonder its starting to flood in - the drug warriors in their efficient execution of the law have created a situation where supply has been badly outstripped (through interdiction) by demand, which has resulted in a sharp/corresponding increase in the price per unit.

This has only drawn in more suppliers seduced by significant increase in margin a unit of their product will make..

When will these fucking idiots learn that the only way to get rid of the black-market drug trade is to take ownership of the manufacturing & supply chain through decriminalization and government distribution (obviously this should never be privatized and put in the hands of corporations as you'll only get a situation similar to what liquor company have caused/created).
