States unite to help people stay safe during festival — Tweed Heads

Saturday, 06 Jun 2009 05:16am

While NSW and Queensland might have been bitter rivals on the State of Origin paddock this week, the states are joining forces for a four-day cross-border traffic operation.

The operation focuses on the “Wintersun” festival and it began yesterday afternoon and will conclude on Monday.

Tweed Byron Local Area Commander Superintendent Michael Kenny said NSW Police were working with their Queensland colleagues to ensure families could attend the festival and soak up the feel of what it might have been like in the 1950s and 1960s.

“While the operation is primarily focusing on driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, officers will also be looking at numerous other traffic related offences such as speeding and defective vehicles,” Superintendent Kenny said.

“We will be targeting motorists this weekend with radars, random breath testing, and an increased police presence.”

Superintendent Kenny reminded all those travelling to the festival to drive to suit the road conditions, and be mindful of the increased number of people on the road due to the public holiday and long weekend.

Motorists are warned to be mindful of an increased number of pedestrians around the festival precinct.

People are urged to slow down in the area to ensure they have time to react to unexpected hazards on the roadway.
