Music production? Software vs Hardware?

For the artists, musicians and dabblers, what do you prefer, software or hardware? I want to move away from a bloody screen and cyber vertigo, is it worth going hardware style? Can it be more expensive that way. I use mainly reason from propellerheads, I don’t like the process of staring at a screen. Why was music so good in the 90s dance scene, what stuff were they using? All hardware? Advice on synths, samplers and sequencers please?
