Mushroom Kits Online??

try shroomery.com and search for the hydrogen peroxide method. this will work even under not so sterile conditions.

Hydrogen peroxide methods DO work, but mates have found they tend to slow growth and can lead to overlay and all sorts of fun things.

Pressure cookers kick arse - very very worthwhile to spend the $70- $80, reducing the chance of contamination issues to 5% or less (even when working in quite unsterile conditions). Be REALLY careful when buying second hand pressure cookers, make sure the seals are perfect as I've seen the sort of damage they can do to a kitchen if they explode (exploding glass jars part make the whole experience even more fun 8o )

If you really want to go the hobo option, have a search around for the fractialisation (sp?) sterilization methods on the shroomery. Basically it involves boiling your jars in a big arse pasta pot for an hour - for three concecuative days. The principal is that the first boil kills the 'easy to kill contams' and makes the endospores (hard to kill contams) hatch. The second boil kills of those that have just hatched and the third boil done as a final precaution.

The downside of this is it takes a long time and you need to be living somewhere where boiling on the stove each night isn't going to cause problems.

Chlorhexide (decanted into a spray gun - available from LARGE pharmacies) quickly becomes the new best friend of budding mycologists. Spray work area and self liberally, and while proper sterilization methods really are advisable, it generally is enough to allow you to work in a normal kitchen.
