Interesting article on research into the brain functioning (or perhaps structuring) in as many as 11 dimensions. I know nothing of algebraic topology to make real sense of this but I immediately thought of string theory and more apt M-theory that also posits 11 dimensions are needed. Maybe the new age quacks are right in trying to link consciousness and the quantum realm.

I don't think this subject is so much about the theoretical dimensions of spacetime (e.g. M-theory) as it is about actually developing an accurate virtual model to help in hacking this black box (the brain).

Of specific interest to me is this bit:

“It is as if the brain reacts to a stimulus by building then razing a tower of multi-dimensional blocks, starting with rods (1D), then planks (2D), then cubes (3D), and then more complex geometries with 4D, 5D, etc. The progression of activity through the brain resembles a multi-dimensional sandcastle that materializes out of the sand and then disintegrates.”

The implication I'm picking up from this is that it could be possible to create true artificial intelligence if we can figure out how to provide the rods, planks and cubes necessary for an artificial mind to generate its own sandcastles (i.e. the process of thinking). Imagine if you could tell Alexa to divide by zero and she were to go off and figure out how to o_o

To add to this, I believe the field of cybernetics could be interesting in this regard. When speaking of building sandcastles.

Admittedly, I only briefly worked with this field as part of my Communication Studies. But can definitely recommend looking into it, if you’re interested in such things.

I just found that the number of dimensions being the same an interesting coincidence. I realize that this article says it doesnt have to be 11 dimensions and various forms of string theory need up to 26 so being a bit facetious. I also wanted to make my corny joke as well at the end. :p

I wish I knew the mathematics to understand this as I said but, and correct me if Im wrong thujone, having knowledge of computer science as you do would help as well. Regardless of my ignorance, I find this fascinating and probably something similar will be needed if we are to really understand the brain.

I have seen this article before but I just have to say I just love this trippy analogy of multi-dimensional "sandcastles" spontaneously building themselves out of the sand, transforming and dissolving again, as well as the mental imagery it invokes... =D

A really poetic connection of the complex mathematical inner workings of the brain to the general magical wondrousness of consciousness, IMO.
