Stimulants Mixing Adderall and Amphetamine? Dangerous? I only want to concentrate.

I don't take anything recreationally (really- not even smoke cigarettes or drink coffee.) But I do have a terrible time to concentrate, which has been a life-long struggle. I've noticed that Amphetamines loose their effect over time (after weeks of taking it consistently) as does Adderall, when taking them I do still feel stimulated, possibly more alert, but the concentration factor declines (it's a very fine line, but I am sure some people know what I mean).

I've found that if I take a small amount of Amphetamine (a 1/4 of a 10mg pill every hour or so) while on Adderall XR 20mg that I can really concentrate. I'm sure in time this effect may lessen as well, but for the time being it works and I'm thankful.

Are there any dangers of taking both at once? Any searches I do online are about coke and Adderall or other recreational type things taken for recreational type purposes.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Kenworth. Well adderallXR is amphetamine. So you're talking about the same substance, just different formulations, which is why you're not getting any search matches. So no, it's not dangerous, you're just adding to the dose of each. Many people with ADHD take an XR form of amphetamines combined with some IR in a way not unlike what you are already doing.

My question to you is: have you ever been to a doctor regarding your concentration issues? You shouldn't struggle to the extent you need amphetamines to concentrate unless you're trying to do something that is truly boring. If you do have ADHD, you would be better getting it treated by a specialist who can work with you to ensure you're getting the right dose and on the right protocol. Some drugs also work better for some than others.

Best,
CFC

Thank you!

I didn't know that they were exactly the same thing, I thought one was a slightly different version or something. Now that I look it up specifically, I don't know how I could have missed that. I have been to a doctor, a few times in the last 20+ years, but since it's always pay-out-of-pocket, it's extremely expensive after all the tests they make you to through, and then the extremely high routine office visit costs, and the multiple visits they hold you hostage with before they give a prescription. The few doctors I've seen so far have been far more concerned about milking me with billing than doing anything productive for me, and once I'm on one thing they want to see me for 10 minutes, ask how I'm feeling and shuffle me out the door with a $200 office visit bill and have no time or interest to explore different versions or dosages. It's extremely frustrating and disappointing, because ADHD is ironically already a hard thing to get help for by the time a doctor realizes you're not pill shopping and by the very nature of the "illness" it makes it even harder to keep following up with until you find a good doctor and pill combo that works.

But yes, concentrating is that hard that I don't get much done at all (no matter how hard I try, and I'm a reasonably disciplined person) without the Adderall. I have no interest in feeling "up" or "down" but if I can keep my mind on my papers or books and get some things done, even for an hour or two, I'm delighted.

The mixed dosage of XR and IR you mentioned... in some instances this is recommended, by doctors? Or is this something that people just do on their own sometimes? This was the first time (since discovering Adderall, prescribed by a doctor 15 years+ ago) that I noticed something that really made a difference with the concentrating.
