Ontario drug investigation leads to 3 arrests, nearly 2,000 kilograms of opium
CBC
May 4th, 2020
A lengthy drug investigation in Ontario has led to three arrests and the seizure of what police describe as a significant amount of opium.

Provincial police say they launched Project Berwick in January to investigate alleged drug trafficking in the Greater Toronto Area.

Over the course of the probe, police searched properties in Ontario and Quebec and seized nearly 2,000 kilograms of opium.

Wow, that's a lot of opium. I wonder if it was destined to be transformed into heroin or sold as-is? I wasn't aware of any large-scale heroin manufacturing being done in Canada.

I know there's at least some demand for opium as a specialty product, I'd imagine it's used more by the expat Persians than anyone else... sort of like the market for khat.
If it was meant to be turned into heroin why bother shipping all the extra crap and having to extract it domestically, where there's more risk?

2 tons is a lot though. That's 200 kilos of morphine.

In a news release Tuesday, Toronto police said on April 27 the service’s drug squad arrested four men at a residence in the area of Park Road North and Highway 401 in Oshawa. Search warrants were also executed on vehicles and residences in Oshawa, Thornhill, Burlington, and Hamilton.

Police allege a residence in Oshawa was producing “large quantities” of crystal meth in an operation run by the homeowner.

Investigators said there were chemicals and lab equipment in the home, which was dismantled by Toronto police and Oshawa firefighters.

“Hazardous chemicals and potentially harmful by-products created during the production of methamphetamine were safely packaged and removed from the residence,” the news release read.

“These materials have been disposed of safely.”

Officers allege that 43 kilograms of crystal meth was seized, which has a potential street value of more than $3.4 million.

Additional drugs were uncovered, including five kilograms of ketamine with a street value of $135,000, as well as an unregistered handgun, police allege.

Four men from the Greater Toronto Area have been arrested in connection with the investigation.

Police said Richard Alexandre, 56, of Oshawa, Richard Jansen, 36, of Burlington, Brendan Coates, 37, of Oshawa, and Kyle Zettler, 34, of no fixed address were arrested and charged.

All four men were released on bail and will appear in court on July 9.

The stuff on the right looks lovely! Sad it had to go to waste.

“This was a collaborative effort involving officers from the Organized Crime Section, Emergency Response Team and Patrol Officers leading to this substantial seizure of drugs,” says Inspector Bill Spearn VPD. “We believe this will have a significant effect on the drug trade and will impact the health and safety of the local community.”

Early in 2020, the VPD’s Organized Crime Section launched Project Transit to target offenders engaged in the distribution of illegal opioids. The investigation culminated in the execution of five search warrants on April 29. Four warrants were executed in Vancouver and one in Richmond.

The following items were seized:

eight handguns, all nine mm semi-automatics
two 50-round drum magazines for nine mm ammunition
20 kilograms of what is believed to be Fentanyl with a bulk street value of $1.6 million ( = $80,000/kg - VPD estimated price)
one kilogram of Cocaine with a bulk street value of $60,000 ( = $60,000/kg)
six kilograms of Methamphetamine with a bulk street value of $90,000 ( = $15,000/kg)
13 kilograms of Cannabis shatter with a bulk street value of $500,000 ( = $38,500/kg)
320 kilograms of Cannabis bud with a bulk street value of $700,000 ( = $2200/kg)
26 kilograms of cutting agent with a bulk street value of $26,000 ( = $1,000/kg)

Police arrested eight people when the warrants were executed. All suspects were later released without charges pending further investigation. The investigation is active and police expect charges to be recommended in the coming months.

Wonder what the "cutting agent" is? I bet caffeine.

Toronto police bust 'professional distributors,' seize nearly $8-million worth of pure cocaine
VOLVNxa.png

TORONTO -- Members of the Toronto Police Service say they brought down “professional cocaine distributors” when they busted a “sophisticated crime group” allegedly in possession of 61 kilograms of pure cocaine, worth nearly $8 million.

“It is rare to seize this quantity of cocaine in a single investigation,” Insp. Donald Belanger said at a news conference held at Toronto Police Headquarters on Monday morning.

“The amount of cocaine and cash seized in this investigation speaks to the level of sophistication of this group. They are not street-level or even mid-level drug dealers – we allege that they are highly organized, and for lack of a better term, professional cocaine distributors.”

The 61 kilograms of powder cocaine, which were allegedly imported to Canada from the United States, were located by officers as multiple search warrants were executed in North York and Scarborough during a months-long investigation, dubbed “Project Corredor.”

“In the fall of 2019, the major project section of the drug squad commenced what became known as ‘Project Corredor,’” Belanger said. “The investigation focused on a group of males based here in the city of Toronto, who we believe were importing and distributing cocaine at the multi-kilogram level.”

Pure cocaine is typically stored in one kilogram bricks, Belanger said. At Monday’s news conference, 61 bricks of pure cocaine, as well as other seized items, were placed on a table in front of his podium.
Of the 61 bricks that were seized by officers, 20 were located inside locked safes found at a residential condo in the area of Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue, Belanger said. Thirty-six more bricks were located inside a condo in the area of Bayview and Sheppard avenues and five additional bricks were seized from a residential house near Bayview and Finch avenues.

Belanger said investigators believe that this crime group “had the capacity to make millions in profits from the sale of cocaine.”

“Once stepped on or diluted, dealers would have ultimately turned these 61 kilograms of pure cocaine into a far greater quality of lower-grade cocaine mixed with any number of cheaper additives,” Belanger said.

“As we’re seeing all too often, much of it would have undoubtedly been ended up laced with fentanyl, a drug that everyone now knows is responsible for far too many deaths here in Toronto and across Canada.”

During the executed search warrants, officers said they also seized more than $210,000 in cash, as well as $14,000 USD, $30,000 Euro, four motor vehicles and several luxury watches.

"All of which we allege to be proceeds of crime,” Belanger added.

Four Toronto men have been arrested in connection with this investigation. Patrick English, 39, David Bergman, 48, Ali Baek, 52, and Ardeshir Omanian, 57, have all been charged.

Two additional suspects, identified by police as Andrew Wilson, 47, and Alan Jones-Smith, 30, both of Toronto, remain outstanding. Warrants have been issued for their arrest.

Italy Seizes ISIS Drugs in World-Record Bust

Authorities in Italy have seized the largest-ever shipment of amphetamines on record, believed to have been manufactured by one of the world’s most feared international terrorist groups, the Islamic State.

The Guardia di Finanza announced on Wednesday that police in the port of Salerno, outside of Naples, had discovered more than 84 million tablets of the drug captagon hidden within paper cylinders that were being transported in a shipping container.

Weighing in at around 14 tonnes and with an estimated street value of one billion euros, the “extraordinary” seizure is the largest of its kind on record, according to the agency’s statement.

Italian authorities believe the captagon had been manufactured by the Islamic State and that the amount would likely be sufficient to satisfy the entirety of the European market for the drug.

Otherwise known as fenethylline, captagon is a psychostimulant that creates feelings of euphoria, well-being and aggression. Its widespread abuse has been documented throughout the Arabic-speaking world.

ISIS has a record of producing the drug to fund its operations, as well as administering it among its fighters to inhibit pain and fear during combat. Several of the terrorists who committed the 2015 attack on the Bataclan concert venue in Paris were later discovered to have ingested captagon.

The seizure follows after a similar shipment was intercepted two weeks ago, again at the port of Salerno. Napolese police discovered another container in which traffickers had hidden almost 3,000 kg of hash and a further 190kg of amphetamines underneath items of counterfeit clothing.

The Guardia di Finanza said in their statement that Wednesday’s shipment was itself too large to have been requested by any one buyer in the region, and that investigators therefore believe it is more likely to have been brought in for a ‘consortium’ of criminal groups.

News of the record-breaking seizure follows just one day after Italian and Albanian authorities announced the successful dismantling of a drug trafficking network that had been smuggling marijuana, cocaine and hashish between the two countries.

According to a statement from Eurojust, which provided support to the authorities involved, police in Italy and Albania arrested 37 members of the organised criminal group, seizing more than three tonnes of drugs, with an estimated street value of 40 million euros.

The agencies also took control of more than four million euros in assets, which included a coffee production and trading factory, a drinks and alcohol distribution company, 15 apartments and seven large cars.

Several of the suspects had previously received convictions in Italy earlier in 2019, and further action in relation to the case is being prepared against suspects in France.

“This outstanding investigative result with simultaneous execution of this cross-border operation was made possible thanks to the Joint Investigation Team between the Albanian and Italian authorities, whose agreement represents a model for the cooperation between Albanian and EU judicial authorities,” Eurojust said in its statement.

The story isn't even consistent, the author recognizes at the beginning of the article that the seizure is of amphetamine (which is accurate, essentially all seized "Captagon" is illicitly-produced and contains amphetamine) but later claims that it's of fenethylline (which true Captagon tablets contain).

Given ISIS's current state, I'm sceptical these pills actually came from them. But it definitely sounds good in the law enforcement press release if you can name drop ISIS.

I kind of thought the same thing, but ISIS is not totally eliminated. I do think maybe it was just an effort to grab attention. Apparently Captagon is the one of the most abused drugs in the Arabian peninsula.

AFAIK Arabic states have been producing Fenethylline tablets for decades for internal distribution. Maybe it wasn't made in a ISIS controlled area, but could have been made in Iran?

Malaysia makes its largest-ever crystal meth seizure

December 14, 2020, 3:37 pm
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysian authorities have seized more than two tons of crystal methamphetamine worth more than $26 million aboard a small boat off the country's western coast, the largest ever such haul in the country's history.
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency said over the weekend that it made the seizure on Dec. 9 off the coast of Penang. The agency said in a statement that a maritime patrol found the drugs on a recreational boat that was behaving strangely.
Methamphetamine is illicitly smuggled across much of Southeast Asia, China and Australia, part of a multi-billion dollar illegal trade in the drug.

Authorities said the man operating the boat tried to flee when he saw the patrol boat and later jumped overboard as his vessel sped off. There was no one else aboard the 12.5-meter (41-foot) vessel. He was arrested and the boat was seized.
Officials found 2,118 kilograms (4,669 pounds) of methamphetamines aboard packed in Chinese tea packets.
The agency did not say where the drug was produced, but Malaysia borders a number of countries where it is produced.
The Golden Triangle, a remote jungle area where the borders of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand meet, was once a major source of the world’s opium and heroin. In recent years it has also become a major producer of methamphetamine.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said earlier in the year that the cumulative value of the methamphetamine market in Asia is more $60 billion.

Toronto police seize $18M in drugs, 65 guns in largest single-day recovery

45-year-old man faces dozens of charges, had no prior criminal record

Toronto police say they've made the largest single-day seizure in their history last month after recovering 181 kilograms of drugs worth over $18 million in street value, along with 65 firearms.

All of the items seized are from a single apartment in Etobicoke. Police announced at a news conference Wednesday they have arrested a 45-year-old man who lives in the unit.

The investigation began earlier this year when 22 Division learned of drug trafficking activity in the area. That led them to identify a residence at 70 Cloverhill Road in the area of Park Lawn Road and Berry Road, said Insp. Tim Crone at the news conference.

Police began "observing" the residential area, made up of parks, detached homes and elementary schools, and were able to gather enough information to obtain a search warrant, he said.

On Nov. 17, police entered the unit and found 45-year-old Daniel Dubajic, who was a person of interest during the investigation with no prior history of criminal activity, said Crone.

"Once inside the apartment, officers immediately located significant amounts of narcotics and firearms, which were in plain sight of the officers," said Crone. "The subsequent ensuing search of the premises located additional large quantities of illicit narcotics, firearms and munitions, and firearm magazine."

A total of 181 kilograms of drugs were seized, which include:

  • 106 kilograms of cocaine.
  • 61 kilograms of crystal meth.
  • five kilograms of fentanyl.
  • nine kilograms of MDMA.

Of the 65 firearms seized, 57 were handguns and eight were long guns. About 15,000 rounds of ammunition was also recovered including high-capacity and extended magazines.

Dubajic is now facing the following charges:

  • Four counts of possession of a Schedule 1 substance for trafficking.
  • 53 counts of possession of an unloaded regulated firearm.
  • Six counts of possession of a loaded regulated firearm.
  • Six counts of possession of a firearm other than restricted or prohibited knowingly not holding a licence.
  • Two counts of knowingly possess a firearm, device or ammunition for transfer.
  • Seven counts of possession of a prohibited/restricted weapon or prohibited device.

"The 26-year-old driver attempted to flee when he saw the patrol boat and eventually jumped overboard."

With over 2000kg of meth on board I'm not surprised lol I bet he was tweaking his nuts off, probably started swimming off at 50mph, surprised he didnt fly off 😂
