I know most my friends say benzos "cancel" out the high, or whatever, but I know from experience this to be false with high enough doses of LSD.

Does anyone know if there is any direct interaction, or if it is more likely that the two are just doing their thing(i.e. LSD binding to serotonin(?) and benzos agonizing GABA)

No direct interaction that I know of - as you said, LSD agonizes 5HT2a (which kicks off a cascade of neural activity), while benzos are positive allosteric GABA modulators (while they aren't direct GABA agonists, they do increase the agonistic effect of GABA at the receptor, leading to a general suppression of neural activity).

Small therapeutic doses of benzos can be used to bring a difficult trip back under control without aborting it completely, but high enough doses will mostly cancel out the effects of psychedelics (unless you are taking a pretty hefty dose of LSD).
