17 years' jail for drug syndicate head
December 06, 2007
THE head of a Queensland drug syndicate has been jailed for 17 years and his three accomplices for between six and 12 years after being convicted of trafficking ecstasy.
Gang ringleader Jason Edward Brophy, 41, and Darren John Jenkins, 33, both from the Gold Coast, were found guilty on Friday after a trial for trafficking the illicit party drug between September and November 2004.
They also were found guilty of supplying a dangerous drug.
Two other accomplices - John Leslie Rollason, 41, and Robert John Green, 37, also from the Gold Coast - already had pleaded guilty at an earlier date to similar charges.
Brophy, who controlled the operation, was today sentenced to 17 years' jail, while sales manager and second-in-charge Rollason received a 12-year sentence.
Rollason is serving another sentence for drug trafficking, which he must complete before starting his new jail term.
Jenkins, who provided the contacts for drug supplies and deals, received a 10-year sentence for his role in the operation.
Green, who helped courier the drugs between NSW and Queensland, was given a six-year sentence but will be eligible for parole in April 2009.
Brophy, Rollason and Jenkins were all declared serious violent offenders.
During the trial the Supreme Court in Brisbane was told the syndicate had organised two major drug deals with more than 180,000 ecstasy tablets - worth millions of dollars - to be transported from Gosford in NSW to the Gold Coast.
The group was believed to be sourcing a further 320,000 tablets prior to the arrests in November 2004.
In sentencing, Justice Margaret Wilson described the operation as "sophisticated" and said all men were fully aware of its scale.
