Ecstasy haul seized ahead of Schoolies

17 years' jail for drug syndicate head
December 06, 2007

THE head of a Queensland drug syndicate has been jailed for 17 years and his three accomplices for between six and 12 years after being convicted of trafficking ecstasy.

Gang ringleader Jason Edward Brophy, 41, and Darren John Jenkins, 33, both from the Gold Coast, were found guilty on Friday after a trial for trafficking the illicit party drug between September and November 2004.

They also were found guilty of supplying a dangerous drug.

Two other accomplices - John Leslie Rollason, 41, and Robert John Green, 37, also from the Gold Coast - already had pleaded guilty at an earlier date to similar charges.

Brophy, who controlled the operation, was today sentenced to 17 years' jail, while sales manager and second-in-charge Rollason received a 12-year sentence.

Rollason is serving another sentence for drug trafficking, which he must complete before starting his new jail term.

Jenkins, who provided the contacts for drug supplies and deals, received a 10-year sentence for his role in the operation.

Green, who helped courier the drugs between NSW and Queensland, was given a six-year sentence but will be eligible for parole in April 2009.

Brophy, Rollason and Jenkins were all declared serious violent offenders.

During the trial the Supreme Court in Brisbane was told the syndicate had organised two major drug deals with more than 180,000 ecstasy tablets - worth millions of dollars - to be transported from Gosford in NSW to the Gold Coast.

The group was believed to be sourcing a further 320,000 tablets prior to the arrests in November 2004.

In sentencing, Justice Margaret Wilson described the operation as "sophisticated" and said all men were fully aware of its scale.

Drug traffickers jailed

FOUR members of a Queensland's biggest ecstasy trafficking gang were today jailed for between six and 17 years.

In the Supreme Court in Brisbane Justice Margaret Wilson found the men were members of a very serious organised crime gang which had sought to reap millions of dollars from the sale of ecstasy.

She found the men had differing roles but all played important parts in the large scale trafficking which included a plan to bring half a million ecstasy tablets from NSW to the Gold Coast.

Last week, a jury found Jason Edward Brophy, 41, and Darren John Jenkins, 33, guilty of trafficking 34-MDMA (ecstasy) between September and November, 2004.

Earlier this year, John Leslie Rollason, 41, and Robert John Green, 37, pleaded guilty to trafficking in ecstasy between September and November 2004.

The trial heard the men were part of a large wholesale group that brought at least 180,000 tablets to the Gold Coast then distributed them to local dealers.

The crown alleged the men's objective was to obtain and then sell about 500,000 ecstasy tablets on the Gold Coast.

Brophy contacted a man named Radunovich in Thailand to arrange access to drugs being held in NSW.

Green made two trips from the Coast to Gosford to pick up the tablets and Jenkins went with him for the second trip.

The court heard a $250,000 deal for 90,000 ecstasy tablets was done in October, 2004 and a similar sale was made one month later.

Justice Wilson found Brophy was a senior member of the ring in Australia with Rollason as his second in charge.

Jenkins had played an important part in selling the drugs while Green was a courier.

Noting the maximum sentence was 20 years jail, Justice Wilson jailed Brophy for 17 years, Rollason for 12 years, Jenkins for 10 years and Green for six years.

Brophy, Rollason and Jenkins were all automatically deemed serious violent offenders and will serve 80 per cent of their sentences before being eligible for parole.

Green will be eligible to apply for parole on April 3, 2009.

Rollason, who was jailed for drug trafficking in 1998, was on parole when he committed the offences and will not start serving the ecstasy sentence until Aporil 2009 when he completes his original sentence.

I once knew Darren Jenkins and 10 years sounds like a heck of a long time for the crime.
You could probably get away with raping a baby and get less time.

I think he'll be out before that then.

They're certainly getting rid of the known "scum" on the north coast NSW atm. the ones that don't pay the cops that is

Such a waste of those poor peoples lives. Those punishments are far too extreme. 17 years? Rapists and murderers probably don't even spend that long in jail.

I'd like to see them all released, compensated for their mistreatment, and then congratulated for trying to provide some top quality clean pills. Unfortunately I really can't see that happening. The red and yellow rolex's (same pill as my display pic) were damn strong, even by 2004 standards, and its a shame to see such a harsh punishment handed down to someone dealing with such a quality product. The only way I could ever see it as being justified putting someone in jail for that quantity of pills would be if they contained 200mg PMA each. It's sad to think that someone could press a poison into pills and pass them off as ecstacy, and get the same punishment as someone dealing with high quality MDMA pills.
