Diagnosing ADD: Who should i see?

^Try self diagnosis on the internet and see what it tells you... ;)

it was a light hearted comment, check the rest of the post.

Ok I kinda figured you were just being facetious, but I still don't understand the connection, I googled self diagnosis and didn't really find anything about cancer...

the joke is a commentary on hypochondriacs who self diagnose themselves with diseases (like cancer) online... generally they fit the symptoms to match the disease.
The point is, let a doctor diagose you. DOn't try and diagnose yourself. Especially with pscyiatric/psychological stuff where symptoms overlap into so many different disorders listed in the DSMIV

[Edit- Removed prices. lil angel15][/QUOTE]

Sorry, I wasn't aware giving prices for licit drugs was a prooblem... I thought it was just street value prices you were avoiding. Anyway, I can see the logic.. won't happen again.

Yeah i dont really understand the pricing thing... i mean i can see how it can turn into a dicksizing debate of who gets what street drugs at what prices, or how its different at different locations, but legal/script meds, the pricing rule seems a bit stupid. theres far worse stuff left unedited on this forum, its just an OCD thing really, like a meth addict with a toothbrush scrubbing inbetween tiles ;-)

There are a number of reasons why prices of licit substances are not permitted within AusDD. The first reason they are not permitted is that the pricing of pharmaceuticals has no bearing on the safe consumption of these substances, therefore, is not in line with the harm reduction goals of the site. The second reason why prices are not permitted is that it removes any ambiguity in regards to the guidelines. This action is mirrored when moderating the 'No Sources' guideline, with the obvious exception being, when there is some HR value.

I would suggest if you believe there are 'far worse' posts being left unedited within AusDD that you utilise the report function. This will allow you to air your concerns with the post and it will then be reviewed and dealt with if necessary.

PSYCHIATRIST. Just don't let him prescribe you Adderall if you're an addict. No stimulants, as a matter of fact. Even Ritalin.

Atomoxetine is not normally considered addictive. Its not exactly a stimulant in the classical sense. As a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor it can often take at least a week to begin to have effect. In some cases it is combined with low doses of stimulants or L-Tyrosine and/or B6 supplements for the first few days in order to accelerate effects.

just wanted to say - hope you get the diagnosis sorted. the sooner, the better :)

1. find an excellent GP who cares, listens properly, doesn't judge you on your past/present drug use, feels good to be around and has your best health at heart.

2. ask them to refer to you a psychiatrist (NOT A PSYCHOLOGIST, NOT EVEN A CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST) and chances are, if your GP is good enough, they will know a psychiatrist that reflects their own values above.

You should never be afraid to tell your doctor ANYTHING, especially when it is YOUR HEALTH at stake.

You only get one brain, one body, one life. Live it the absolute best way possible. I know you can!

Just wanted to say thanks to the OP for posting this and the subsequent replies. I have had most of the signs of ADD since I was a kid and have always thought in the back of my mind that was the problem. After I spoke with a co-worker about it (who is being treated for ADD with Adderall), I came online and did a little research. I saw this thread and took that test and that prompted me to see my doctor. She thinks I would benefit greatly from the Ritalin. I'm in the process of getting my prescription approved, so I can't start taking the meds yet, but I'm definitely ready to try something, anything to finally concentrate at work, school, hell, at home when I'm trying to get things done. I'm very apprehensive about taking any pharmaceuticals, but I am willing to take the chance at this point!

^^Ur Welcome.

Just to update everyone i'm now actually off the wellbutrin cuz of financial constraints ATM, so now my doc has switched me over to robexetine. Haven't tried it yet but will soon, will let u guys know how it goes....

Peachness, did you see a psych doc or just a normal GP to get the ritalin?

I just went to my regular GP. She asked me some questions and said I'd benefit from the Ritalin. I've been taking it for two months and it's alright I guess. I can tell a difference, but the comedown in the evening is terrible. I'm sure I'd feel better if I didn't smoke weed so much. /shrug/

if you believe that you have adhd, go and see a clinical psychologist and mabey even link them in with you're GP, that way you get both the medical intervention stabilisation and the emotional follow up support from the psych or counsellor.

if you contact local mental health services they can point you in the right direction or alternatively go to the Australian psychological society which most practicing clinical psych have to be affiliated to in some way

the link:

Diagnosis criteria is on the third or fouth page of this link:

http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/...yperactivity_disorder_and_adults?OpenDocument

a caution with behavioral diagnosis, many of the behavioral characteristics are quite normal and can be quite easy to self label and believe that you are the sum of the diagnosis; and amount to nothing other than the behavior; just like drug addicts ;)

try not to personalise a behavior, thats why we pay psychs to do their jobs;)

if talked to Paramatta mental health team as part of my job in the aod field and have found them extremely helpful, if you talk to services ask who they would recommend as good clinical staff soon get a good reputation with them.

good luck
