I gotta go to the dentist coz I was eating and chipped off a tooth, not just a normal "chip" It took off half a tooth! It's hurting like a bitch too. Do dentists here in Oz prescribe medication? Or do I have to see my GP? Sorry pretty basic question here. Thanks all.

See the dentist asap. For analgesics go see a pharmacist as explain your situation, they will give you the strongest over the counter medication (or one they deem suitable for your condition).

I think dentists can prescribe pain killers, but whether yours actually will or not is another question. If they're not going to fix it up in a single visit then I'd assume you could get panadine forte at the most (which should do the trick for the pain unless you've got an exposed nerve or something).

Try getting a whole clove (the spice) and wedging it next to, or between the broken tooth. It will usually give very effective temporary relief.

Heh, on a similar note, do all dentists here have N2O? I must confess I've never been to a dentist with nitrous before...

^ No they don't. While most seem to in Australia (at least around these parts), in New Zealand I found those that offer nitrous to be quite rare. It was a bit like some specialty stores; you have to phone around to find one that's got what you're after ;)

As a kid my dentist did...even back then before I realised what it was I was apparently one of his 'best' patients, went right under!

SnatchMaster, hope this helps answer your question. Not sure what state you are in, but the following extract applies to Queensland.

Specific authority for dentists
Controlled drugs [section 56]
Dentists are authorised, so far as is necessary to practise dentistry, to-

(a) obtain the following controlled drugs, possess them at the place where they
practise dentistry, and administer them to a person while treating that person:
(i) codeine
(ii) morphine
(iii) oxycodone
(iv) papaveretum
(v) pentazocine
(vi) pethidine

(b) prescribe no more than three days’ supply of codeine or pentazocine for a
person's dental treatment; and

(c) give to someone who is authorised to administer a controlled drug
(eg. a nurse), an oral or written instruction to administer codeine,
morphine, oxycodone, papaveretum, pentazocine or pethidine at the
place where the dentist practices dentistry.

Dentists are not permitted to supply controlled drugs to their patients. If
patients require medication following treatment, the dentist can write a
prescription for those drugs specified above, which can then be
dispensed by a pharmacist.
A new provision relating to the use of fentanyl by certain dentists was
included in the regulation in December 2000. This provision states that a
dentist who has successfully completed a certified course of training
relating to the use of fentanyl may obtain, possess and administer this
substance when treating a person.
The Dental Board of Queensland are responsible for determining which
training courses are appropriate and forwarding this advice to
Queensland Health so that these courses can be certified by the Chief
Executive.

Hope this is of some help. Goodluck! %)

Thanks everyone, especially Pharm_Friendly for the detailed list! :) I live in Western Australia but I'm sure the laws are pretty similar anyhow. I've got an appointment for Monday so see how it goes... and what i can get prescribed, because I am in genuine pain. Thanks again everyone. :)
