Shortly I'll be starting a new job in the Melbourne CBD, but I currently live quite a long way out of the city. I'm thinking I may need to become a public transport slave again, but there will be times when I don't have that option. Some of my shifts will finish after the last trains run, and the trams don't run far enough to get me home.

So anyway, the point of this thread: Does anyone else work in a major city but live a long way away? What are the cheapest and best options for getting to work each day? And more importantly, where are those sneaky little places where you can park cheaply or for free? This applies to everyone in every state too - share your secrets and help your fellow bluelighters save time and money! :)

There are all day free parking in some Carlton streets and only a 5 minute tram trip into the city, I am not sure what the streets are named but I wil get back to you on that one. All the fringe area's like Cralton, Collingwood, Richmond, Sth Melb have place's like that you just have to do ya research.
I will post as soon as I spot some buddy

Peace LOve and Mungbeans

In Brisbane...I used to park in the State High rowing club near the state library. Dunno if it's still possible though. Also...if you're a gold casino rewards member, you can park there for free!

I'm ridiculously spoiled. My husband gets a free park in a parkikng building from his work. We ride in together and I pick the car up from there when it's time to pick up the kids.

Then he takes the train home.

I still have to walk about 15 minutes to uni, but all in all it's a pretty good deal.

i'm so bad at finding parking spaces; during the film festival i kept parking in no standing zones and expected to come back and find my car towed, but i didn't even end up with a ticket! (yet i park for three hours in south yarra with a FLAT FUCKING TYRE and get a $105 fine. cunts.)

i agree with rats_are_dancin - carlton's the best spot to look (up around the grattan street area, perhaps a little further).

My suggestion would be to park somewhere near the end of the tram line, so that you could catch the tram after work and then get in your car and drive the rest of the way home. If it was an early morning shift then yes I'd say try and find something in the city, but you've probably got no hope in the afternoon.

All I can say is good luck!

^ I used to do something similar. What you need to do is experiment with various combinations for a few weeks to find the best option. You need to weigh up monetary costs of travel, but also put a $ figure on your time, your best choice is the one that is cheapest.

Being from Sydney I am not to sure of the Melbourne car parking situation, but from the times I have been there I am assuming it is as bad as here.

Best bet is to ride the public system or pay for car parking until you can build up some repoir with your co-workers to the point when they let you in on the free car park gold!

Crown Casino is the best place to park if you are coming in past 10 am. Parking is 5 dollars and you can park there as long as you like. Some nights when I know i'm going to drink, I would park at the Crown and leave my car there overnight. As you only pay to enter ya set! It's safe too.. I've left my car there for a week before and nothing has happened.

This wont really help you... but is a good parking tip for people who live in the city and don't have a car spot.

When I use to live on Flinders Lane (Melbourne), I use to park my car in the hyatt car park. Anyway, since I only drove my car on weekends, on the Saturday I would tell the car park attendant I lost my ticket - They can only charge you the maximum daily limit for THAT DAY - Being a saturday, you have weekend rates - 7 bucks. I would then park my car on the road and drive around on the weekend.. Sunday night, I would park my car back in to the Hyatt.... 7 dollars for weekly parking not bad:)

friskk: I really don't get how some people are so comfortable leaving cars overnight in car parks regularly. What you claim to have been doing at the Hyatt for example is just asking for trouble, there's nothing to stop them deciding some time during the week that your car has been abandoned and get it towed.

Pleo: perhaps we could be of more help if you told us which direction out of the city you'll be coming from?

Hoptis: Nah man! I've left my car at the Hyatt for 2 weeks before... Nothing happens. The car park is fairly big - I have a nice new car - not an old bomb. Plenty of people have permanent parking...

It's all about perception man.

I know the ultra rare free parking spot in the CBD... its also one of the best kept secrets!

my days at Hard Kandy were not a complete waste of time ;)

Public transport. I don't actually drive, and having spent a couple years bouncing in the city (1 hour drive from my home) I find myself relying on trains and buses to get to work - and I think it's great.

You get the odd weirdo but I save a bomb in petrol and you meet some interesting folk.

I'll be coming in from the south east suburbs, from the direction of the frankston line. And I have to get to the north of the CBD.

I'm thinking that parking on the outskirts and getting a tram in would be the best option, unless they manage to strike some kind of deal for all day parking in the city. Since I live in zone 2, a daily ticket is about 10 bucks. I think you can get earlybird parking all day for about $12 (not sure how close that is to the actual CBD though).

Morning - you should park on Flinders street, next to the Church. 12 Dollars early bird... enter before 10 am.

After 10 am.. you should park at crown casino - $5 bucks..

Best value.

On second thoughts I'd go with the Casino carpark. At $5 a park, how can you go wrong?

Rent a parking spot??
Interesting thought! Any idea how much CBD parking spaces cost? If it worked out to around $12 a working day it'd be worth it for the convenience alone! :)

^^Car park spots can usually be rented out at $50 a week. I don't think you can rent a spot out for the day.
