im sure a lot of u in melbourne have been busted for fare evading on the trams, i got busted a few times and have to pay quite a bit and i dont want to.
what happens if u just dont pay it? does someone come around to ur house to seize goods like they say on the infringement notice? has anyone gotten away with not paying it? if u have tell me how u did it

offer to mow one of the paying passenger's lawn.

Maybe you should stop being a cheapskate and fork out the massive $3.60 or whatever it is and actually PAY??

Hard to get off, just pay the fine(s) and be done with it. And stop freeloading and making the rest of us pay more. Clearly you're a bit of a slow learner since it's happened a few times, so please go back to the top of this post and read it again to make sure it sinks in.

How's that for useful advice??

*nods*

I can't understand why people are so tight arse or cheap that they refuse to pay the fare and when they get busted they crack the shits about it!

My weekly public transport costs me $50+ :\ for a weekly zone 1 and 2 and thats NOT including night riders or taxi's etc. Im on a casual wage so it's definantly a better option than getting a fine.

My other gripe is this, you are using a service so why shouldn't you have to pay for it? You use a bus or a taxi...you pay for it...why should you not pay for trains and trams just cause you MAY get away with it.

If you get busted it's your own stupid fault and people deserve to get fines when there are people every day coughing up more than $50 to get to and from work :X

And yes...the fines go up and increase if you don't pay it and then will take you to court over it and the collection agency. It's all legit and is stated on the infringement notice.

You obviouslly had your reasons for not buying a ticket. But you also have to understand if you dont buy a transport ticket and get caught you have to wear the fine :|

Because you cant afford to pay it is not a good enough excuse to dispute it as then you will have to incurr furthur court costs if you lose and also saying you lost your money gambling will not wash either.

Dont have a go at us just because you've gotten yourself into hot water when you knew the consequences of what you were doing.

Sorry dude but maybe you should walk home next time. You got the fine....you have to pay it.

If you seriouslly cant afford to pay it ring the Dept Of Infrastructre and come to some form of a payment plan or something. If you ignore their demands it will only make things worse.

advice no. 1: don't put a question out there if you don't want honest replies.
advice no. 2: take up a spelling course. advices isn't actually a word. advice is a plural of itself.
advice no. 3: click me to solve all your problems

on the plus side.. if you've got no money, at least you can't get to the casino to lose any more :) although come to think of it, that probably won't stop you.

Muzby - everyone knows that the best way to beat a gambling addiction is to simply WIN. Then it's not a problem.

has anyone actually evaded the fare-evading fine?

-evader

I have disputed it and won. But i had a valid reason. My $50 weekly ticket was in my other jacket pocket from the night before which i didnt have on because i swapped jackets in the morning before work and forgot to take it out. I wrote them a letter and said i could produce my ticket with the details and the date it was validated, i waited for the fine in the mail and kept the temp daily ticket they gave me to get home, sent copies of it to the Dept of Infrastructre, and said i was happy to go to court (i was nice to them and polite. not mean and being a cunt to them) because i knew i was right and it was an honest mistake.

But because i COULD produce the ticket they dropped the fine and understood these things do happen.. They apologised for the inconveniece and wished me a happy day.

I think it also helped that i had no prior fines though.

Dude, seriouslly if you fucked up at least admit it to them and come to some form of arrangement to repay it. Im pretty sure they will let you do some payment plan thing. How much do you owe them exactly?

Maybe ypou should acknowledge you have made a mistake, learn from it, suffer the consequences and pay how much you owe and not do it again? At least then you can move on and the $$ won't increase and make matters worse.

tram fines suck shit.....

$150 is a ludicrous amount of money. Cars cause heaps more problems for the environment, not to mention the problems with traffic in the city etc etc and a parking fine is only $50.

I thought the government was trying to encourage people to use public transport over cars anyway???

I appealed one fine TWICE and they didn't accept my reasons blah blah, in writing, by phone etc etc. I won't be going to court short of them physically dragging me there.

GET FUCKED

btw I PAY for my travel every time.

^ how come you got a fine then?

I have to say, though I'm all for accepting responsibility for your actions, I do think tram fines are completely disproportionate to the 'offence'.

Whatever happened to the punishment must fit the crime?

In all honesty just pay the fines, it's not worth the dispute unless you have an extremely valid reason (of which you obviously don't)...they should be able to work out an instalment plan or something if you don't have the cash up front.

I can't believe people are taking the moral highground on this one though, ffs, I'm sure everyone has hopped a tram at one time or another...I know I definitely have, and I hardly think it makes me evil incarnate.

They really should install more change machines though, I am constantly forgetting to leave coins in my purse for the tram the next morning.

158 times 4= $632

the first time i got caught and gave them a bs address, so 158 * 2.

the second time i got caught then got off and got on the other tram i transfer to get to work and got busted again, haha, so 158 * 2 in one day, the muthafuckaz

^ Shouldn't you have been given a temporary daily ticket after the first fine? I've only been fined once but they gave me one after writing out the fine.

I got off, but only because I had a valid concession card - I just couldn't find it when they checked my ticket, despite it being in my bag all along. 8(

I did know a guy in uni who refused to buy tickets at all or pay any of his fines, and once he owed over $1000 was taken to court. He claimed they just gave him community service in a library to work it off, but I don't know how they assessed that he couldn't actually pay. This was also about 7 years ago, so I don't know if the process has changed since then.

I always buy tickets, but begrudgingly. The service sucks, the inspectors are assholes, and the fines are way out of proportion to the offence.

i've been assaulted by tram inspectors, had my shirt torn twice, but there is no fucking way I am going pay these lowlife hopeless cunts wages', what honestly possesses you to be a tram inspector? WHy should we be fined for riding on an electric horsecart. I've never been caught, and dont intend on being caught. Tell me what person on earth can justify $150 for skipping a few stops?

Fix the system- eg running on time, clean carriages, and find drivers who actally give a fuck about their passengers.. and then I'll pay your measly 3.60 you demand for outright shithouse service.

the inspector told me to get a ticket but there was a line up to the ticket machine and before i could get one he had to get off with his cunt buddies to do his next bust so i didnt get one and continued my fare-evading.

anyway, what i want to know is how they tracked ur friend down, did they send people to his house? im thinking about moving houses so maybe i could do it before they send ppl to my house? i would like to know more about how ur friend settled the fines by doing community service do u still keep in touch with him?

cheers and happy evading

why is it that when i read that, all i can think about is that scene in the simpsons where lisa puts the zapper in the cupcake, and bart keeps going back to try to get it, even though he gets zapped?

tram fine $158

moving house approx $500 (plus the usual associated b/s that comes with it..)

interesting call.

would probably be easier to buy a ticket you realise..

I assume via the details he gave them when he got fined. I'm not sure how he settled them through community service (haven't been in touch with him for years) but I guess he somehow proved to them that paying off more than a grand in fines was beyond his means financially. He was a student at the time, unemployed, and from memory was living in his car and at friends' places, so it probably wasn't too hard to show he couldn't pay.....

^It's the other way around, dude. You pay for the services you use. Whether they're acceptable or not.
You use, you pay.

If you want to protest feel free not to use them at all. :)
By the by, I completely agree Melbourne's transport system is a joke and the fines are very harsh, but that doesn't give you the right to steal.
