^^^ you know, I've lived on the Gold Coast for about 5 or 6 years now (take off the year I spent in sydney) and I still have no idea why we all call it BrisVegas.

Cause its like Las Vegas with its commercial cheesy over the top tourist crap, I assume....

Correct me if I'm wrong.

When were you in Newcastle last? 1979?

I want to find these kingswood cabs...

That's why I thought it was called BrisVegas.

I know this isn't really an indicator of anything... but I did market research for about 18 months and anytime we had to call QLD everyone would groan because on average the QLDers we called were so dumb. Sydney people refused more often and were ruder but they tended to answer the questions quickly and didn't need to ask us what different words meant. QLDers were nicer but spoke so god damn slowly and I swear we needed to tell them the meaning of every third word we said.

I've never found Brisbane to be over the top touristy... the gold coast maybe but not Brisbane.

I have lived in Brisbane for almost 3 or 4 years on/off, and still have no idea why its called BrisVegas.....

Out of all the places I have travelled and visited, I was happy with Brisbane and thats why I have settled here, after almost 4 years of travelling.

I think Tasmania is way more backwards than QLD.

I could understand if the Gold Coast was called brisvegas, with the casino, endless hotels and tourists

Here we go. Every time we have a thread like this it deteriorates into calling Qlders less intelligent than Southerners. Are you serious? Listen to yourself. Speaking from personal experience, I don't need to ask what words mean, nor do I speak slowly. Perhaps you should do some travelling and live a little.

Change the record. It gets boring after a while.

^^ You're comparing the opinion of a single person (yourself) to the opinions of a large team of people who have spoken to thousands of randomly selected QLDers.

And? *shrugs* If people doing market research in Melbourne or Sydney have the same opinion as that poster, its not surprising they'd all jump to the same conclusion.

I live here, I think I would know better than someone from down south whose never lived anywhere else (and before anyone has a hissy fit about making assumptions, have a think about what was said) - I think its ridiculous to say everyone from Sydney and Melbourne are smart, bright etc and people from Qld are largely stupid. I've found that people who have travelled and lived in different cities are far less likely to make comments that generalise, mostly because they've been exposed to other cultures and ways of life.

Besides, we're talking about market research here - its not a reliable way of measuring intelligence.

Edit: I was born in Sydney and lived there for the first 12 years of my life and consider myself a southerner, ironically. For the record.

Did anyone claim it was a reliable way of measuring intelligence?

No one made any silly generalisations about the entire population of queensland being stupid and victoria/nsw being intelligent.

Someone stated their experiences dealing with people from QLD. Where did you get all this crap from? It's all well and good to debate, but you're being defensive and misconstruing what is just a recounted experience into a generalised attack on QLD...

Apollo: Not at all - its been stated in numerous other threads and this one (on the previous page) that Qlders are stupid. I get sick of hearing it, mostly because that statement itself sounds ignorant and parochial.

We have car rego number plates here "QLD - The Smart State" LOL

Haste - Gold Coast is like hour or so drive away from Brisbane.

Urbie - yeah I know, still doesn't explain why Brisbane is known as Brisvagas. I'm sure the gold coast is known as its own area just like Geelong is seperate to Melbourne, and Wollogong to Sydney.

What I don't understand is why people from Sydney and Melbourne have these massive superiority complexes about their home cities?

Melbourne is not cool because it has a thousand back alley bars that charge $7 for a beer, invented some dance that looks like an epileptic fit, hosts a grand prix once a year and everyone wears rediculously over-priced "trendy" clothes.

Sydney is not cool for still looking like its from a tacky 80's Miami Vice set (Oh and that goes for the Gold Coast too..), having people that act like wankers for no good reason, over-pricing property, bad pollution, and generally all the crap that goes along with having a a city thats too big for itself.

I could write a few sentances about the pitfalls of Brisbane too, but I think its all be adequately covered above. There was some point I was moving towards with this, about dickheads with unjustified egos, sprouting shit about whatever city they are from, but I honestly can't be fucked making it now...

Different people have different opinions. There's no need to be a wanker about it.

Oh and I'm from brisbane.

Here are a couple of definitions of Brisvegas:

Definitions of Brisvegas

I think the word brisvegas is quite fitting...not literally, but because, like LasVegas, Brisbane can be a little quirky, if not downright surreal at times... ;)

And for all of our brothers and sisters from the southern states who allege that they can't understand what we're saying...here you go:

Talk Queenslandish

"Love ya Brisbane! You mean the world to me; we laugh, we cry; we struggle, we try; you're still the best place to be...
Love ya Brisbaaaaaane!!!!"

=D
