(Victoria) Australian GPs and ADHD meds

Disappointing to hear. I always thought the difference between Australia and close by Asian nations is what gets things done in Australia comes down to who you and how influential they are.

In most of Asia making cash payments to the right people insures favorable treatment. But what do I know.

Like the other user said before there IS ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE! GPs aren't prescribing nowhere, you have to do a really long lasting diagnostic with a specialised psychiatrist, otherwise - no chance. Also bigger hospitals do meanwhile have ambulances for ADHS in adults, perhaps you try it there?

Ah yeah, and I wanted to tell you WE ARE NOT IN ASIA HERE. :D

JJ

GP's cannot even prescribe d-amp or ritalin as continuing treatment. You need to go back to your psychiatrist to get new scripts - though they usually give 5 repeats (5 months supply)

I know you replied with this ages ago.
But I just read through this thread again and did a bit more research, and I believe that this is not the case, at least not in the states I checked (vic and nsw).

In order to prescribe, the doctor needs an authorization by the department of health.

Generally yes you have to be a specialist to be granted that authority to commence prescribing to a new patient.

However a gp can technically also apply for that authority for certain purposes, mainly for temporary prescribing between specialists, but it is possible it could happen for other reasons, but it'd need department of health approval.

Which, in practice still means it's pretty much just not gonna happen, most doctors won't wanna get involved in shit like that in case something goes wrong and they wind up sued or face sanctions.

I suspect that the only time gp's prescribe it is where for some reason the specialist is unable to for a period of time, and supplies supporting documentation for a gp to get an authority to prescribe.

I'm in Austria and in treatment since 8 years. I know what I talk.

JJ

EDIT: If you once have been diagnosed your GP will get informed by your psych. THEN he is allowed to prescribe. And even then you will get a lot of "NOs"....

Without a diagnose, forget it! :D

Or why do you think I'm running every once per month to my psych to get my prespcription? Since 8 years???

Ugh.

JJ
EDIT: Even if my psych is on holiday he has 1 or 2 psychs to go to - and they ALWAYS want to talk about you first before they prescribe. I mean, everybody could come and say "give me Amphetamine, I'm suffering from ADHD." So NO CHANCE without a diagnose, sorry.

Are ADHD medications for adults covered by the PBS?

Does anyone get prescribed Ritalin or Dexamphetamine (5mg) due to mild symptoms of ADD by a GP or Psychiatrist?
I heard those medications aren't covered by the PBS Scheme but I was told that 20 years ago.
I have a good relationship with my local GP who writes me scripts for anti psychotics meds like amisulpride and Seroquel which I take due to symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder, as well as being diagnosed as having dissociative disorder.
I also get scripts for 10 mg of Valium a week but I believe I am also getting symptoms of ADD or ADHD as my concentration is poor.
Would my GP be open to giving me a low dose of some kind of ADHD medication?
Just looking for advice

EDIT: If I see how many meds you get every day for me it's very clear that your concentration is poor. Side effects....

Guys is it true to say it's not what you know but who you know.

What about (and this is very much a hypothetical situation) if I was a personal friend to a prominent and influential public figure like say for example corporate big shots Gerry Harvery or Gina Reinhardt. You know a real big mukka. Someone who is ultra wealthy notably well connected.

Would their personal assistant be able to organise a sympathetic psychiatrist to hook me up with scripts for pharmaceutical grade amphetamines

Oh my goodness....

prominent people - yeah let them go into the parmacy and say: Hello, I'm Brad Pitt, will you give me amphetamines - I mean - I'm Brad Pitt...

What this guy says to Roger.

Dont talk to me about ADHD. I am the worlds most agreeable person and people keep tryingto curtail my freedom.
I think 2020 sent those who have slim to zero hope of becoming octogenetians into a real sense of buzz where anal bacteria became their source of longevity. God bless.
Plus Adhd meds give you a sound snooze once other people taper off their dose. Now go prayto the holy father.

Which planet are you from?

ADHD meds are stimulants and can ruin your sleep drive in some cases, and also affect your deep sleep (slow wave sleep) to a certain extent...not sure if it's long term, but short term it is for sure.
