Recruiting Want to Stop or Reduce your Drinking?

VCU?s Institute of Drug and Alcohol Studies (located in Richmond, Virginia) is currently recruiting 21-70 year olds who would like to stop or reduce their drinking to participate in a 16-week study. The study involves:

  • A brief phone interview to see if you qualify
  • A screening visit that will involve a series of interviews, blood samples, urine screening, physical exam (about 3 hours of your time)
  • Baseline visit where you will receive your study medication (which may be an active drug or a placebo), instructions on taking the medication, and additional baseline testing
  • Treatment phase lasts 16-weeks, and you will come into the clinic 8 times for brief counseling, questionnaires and more medication (about 40 minutes per visit). You will be asked to call daily into an interactive voice response system
  • Follow up visit to complete questionnaires and draw blood samples.
The purpose of this study is to see whether the medication Zonisamide compared with inactive placebo is safe and effective for reducing alcohol use. Zonisamide, which is an FDA approved medication for the treatment of epilepsy in adults and children. The use of Zonisamide to help reduce drinking is experimental.
