Political Satire and Meme Megathread

^ They don't even know.

A few things:

1. We're drafting loose guidelines for the meme thread. It's not as easy as it might seem. We don't want to be overly restrictive and we don't want racist content, for example.

2. I shouldn't have used the word 'alt-right' in my earlier post, because it encompasses a wide array of views and is vague. This is exactly why someone more seasoned with BLUA and images is taking the lead.

3. If a mod UAs a post, don't repost it. (FYI, I didn't UA the original, but I'm respecting a decision. Please do the same.) If you have a question or problem, send a pm to a mod, an smod, or go to STH. Reposting a UA'd image isn't going to fly.

Omg stop being so serious!

Look what happens when tongue on cheek fun is taken seriously.

Thanks cdugz :)

Fwiw, I removed Jah's censorship post because it was needlessly inflammatory. It was a dig at bluelight and off topic.

Bear in mind, if we remove your post- its not a big deal.

Please just carry on with funny stuff.

Sorry swilow, it kind of is a big deal. Unless you don't care that you are creating an echo chamber in here.

Jah's memes were funny and didn't seem inflammatory at all. The fact that they hit a nerve and caused you to censor them only means that you were were inflamed.

Maybe there is some history there that I'm not aware of but it shouldn't make a difference to the individual post, which was exactly what this thread is supposed to be about.

I couldn't help but notice the binary in this said something, so I converted it to ASCII. It says...

Lyrics from Never gonna give you up by Rick Astley...

lmao good find, thanks for that.

Gotta post a few more:

Jah's post that I removed was a dig at staff and not at all "what this thread is supposed to be about". I'm not going to apologise for removing shitposts from the forum. Trolls aren't welcome here.

I think when cduggs was referring to "alt-right", she wasn't talking about the valid conservative views someone might have. The classification "alt-right" these days clearly indicates anti-refugee, anti-Muslim, violent KKK types. And so on.

Damn that's awesome, glad you took the time to do that because I wasn't gonna. :)

Okay I didn't actually roll on the floor, or laugh out loud even. But inside my head I was.

Lol...I'm saving those in case I get into a spat with one of my republican Christian relatives.

a word on what is and isnt acceptable. not so much "rules" as "shit i thought was already understood by most everybody but apparently still needs to be said explicitly".

its hard to objectively state what is and isnt allowed because dog whistles and other things intended to be malicious and harmful are easier to hide in imagery than words; we can make efforts not to conflate "used by bigots" with "intended to promote bigotry", ie pepe which just happens to get used a lot by bigots but isnt necessarily meant to be a symbol of bigotry in and of itself, but its not really up to any individual to determine what is and isnt seen as promoting bigotry, a single individual looking at something and thinking its offensive doesnt mean the symbol is actually offensive, but if enough people see it that way then it does indeed change and become an offensive symbol, the same way that the definitions of words change when enough people accept and promote the "new" usage, so too does the meaning of symbols and imagery change when enough people agree on its meaning.

"ironic" bigotry is still bigotry; even if something is posted thats intended to highlight how absurd it is that people really think that way, there are more than enough people that really think that way, and the effect of "ironic" bigotry is no different than "real bigotry", especially for those not "in" on the "joke" (or that dont get why its being made light of in the first place). jokes only work when they're directed up - mocking the powerless isnt a joke, its being a fucking hateful shitsipper.

in short, you dont have to agree or understand why something is considered offensive for it to be offensive, but you do have to accept that you agreed not to post certain content on this site, and what qualifies as content that isnt allowed is something that can change over time as well as be modified by intent and context, the user's post history. if something gets flagged as promoting bigotry or harassment or other malicious intent then it will be removed, and posters that continue posting that kind of content despite being told to knock it off will be infracted as necessary until they stop being a self-centered dick and abide by the rules. its not a big deal to have a post unapproved unless you make it a big deal (and frankly we'd prefer that you didnt); asking why is fine, but even if you dont like the answer, thats still the way it is.

relevant threads for discussing this stuff:
"ironic" bigotry is still bigotry
why do symbols become offensive?

If you ask me I think you should just ignore it. A lot of people will just argue and argue and argue and argue and it'll never go anywhere. If a sensible person asks a question that's honest and open that's one thing, but if someone just keeps arguing about if something that's quite obviously sexist or bigoted really is sexist or bigoted, I say ignore them and let them have their tantrum by themselves.

I'm assuming this little bit of obviously sexist bs that just got removed is yet another example of the ongoing "political censorship", like so many examples I've seen that is continually being brought up.

For what it's worth, I have no doubt that there are a great many bluelighters like myself who see through this bs political censorship as mostly just negative people spreading negativity then getting angry that someone took it down.

I've certainly seen nothing to suggest it's anything else. They're just a loud minority.

This is why I'm glad I'm not a mod. Anywaaaays. Back to memeing! It's not like there's any shortage of right and left wing content in this thread, which is awesome. It's great that this thread continues to provide both. And I think most people can see the difference between a political meme they disagree with, and someone basically stating outright that women aren't as good as men at X and deserve being discriminated against.

It's so easy for the loud minority to cause you to forget that there's a quiet majority backing you.

Sorry for getting off topic, I just felt like it's something that needed saying.
