Recovering alcoholic to launch incredible new app to help others in his position

A man who was left with almost ‘nothing at all’ after becoming addicted to alcohol is to launch an incredible new app offering support to others in his position.

Samuel Bennett, 31, was left homeless after alcohol addiction caused him to spiral out of control and almost led him to end his life.
Fortunately, he managed to turn his life around and is in now in the process of launching Meet4acoffee – a one-of-its kind social recovery network offering support to people suffering with addiction.
Samuel, from Sheffield, told Metro.co.uk: ‘Alcohol was my first love. It gave me everything I never had, from the moment I first drank, I knew I had met my best friend in life and that we would forever be there for each other.

‘I loved how I felt a distance from what was the reality that was my life, despite coming from a great family and loving home my experience of school was rubbish and I wanted to escape my reality as much as I could.’

‘People around me concluded I was an alcoholic many years before I did, despite spending my 18th birthday in rehab shaking and broken I didn’t want to admit I had any type of problem.’
It was only when he ended up homeless and was treated like a ‘piece of rubbish on the street’ that he decided to put an end to it and came up with the idea for Meet4acoffee.

Meet4acoffee works by allowing users to sign up and state whether they are ‘in recovery’, ‘not in recovery’ or ‘other’.
The free app, launching in the next few weeks, will show users like-minded people nearby, allowing the user to connect with them or even just reach out to help them.

It will include the feature ‘My circle’, a person’s friends network, where they can log ‘clean days’, share photos, send messages of encouragement and get notified of friends’ milestones.

Explaining how the app was born, the 31-year-old said: ‘My drinking had propelled me to a place of dark self pity, where I had lost everything and everyone in my life.
‘Stopping drinking was like waving goodbye to someone at a train station you love with all your heart knowing you will never see them again.
‘Alcohol, my best friend but also the root of all my problems had to go and so I got clean with a real mind set to get out and change the world as much as I could and that’s how meet4acoffee was born.’

How to stop drinking and start recovery
– No matter how bad your addiction to alcohol is, know that you can always recover, but it varies for different people depending on how strong the addiction is.
– One of the first steps towards recovery is to evaluate the costs and benefits of drinking.
– Then set yourself goals and prepare for change by a certain date.
– Decide whether you think you’ll need medical supervision to get sober as you will most likely suffer withdrawal symptoms.
– These can include; headaches, shaking sweating, vomiting, anxiety and trouble sleeping.
– Plan for triggers and cravings.
– Get support.

Despite some mixed feeling about these kinds of things, I have seen worse ideas out there. Surprised there isn't something already like this out there TBH.

Sounds like it has the potential for turning into a dating app for alcoholics ? If it offers help to some people then I wish him and the app the best of success.
