Best of my most recent watchiings have been...

What We Do in the Shadows - spoof "reality show" about four centuries-old vampires who share a house in Wellington, New Zealand. When one of them "turns" a local man they discover that the occulted world of the undead can run into some teething troubles when brought kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. Really enjoyed this - very funny and with subtly effective special effects. Ticklesome and toothy.

Ghosts... of the Civil Dead - as recommended a while back by SJ & Consumer and watched finally watched a couple of days ago. Really enjoyed this one too - waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of its time and probably even more relevant today than it was at the time. Talk about the canary in the coalmine. Australian film about the commercialisation of the prison system and the apparent need for the powers that be to set said system up in such a way as to ratchet up crime - and especially the fear of crime - as a means of bolstering control and the illusion of providing safety. Very insightful film featuring a young Nick Cave as both an actor and on soundtrack duties. Excellent film and definitely worth tracking down.

PS: Bear, got one of your recommendations in my ToView list already but gonna have to add Zoom too cos that sounds right up my proverbial - thanks for the tips! <3

Glad you enjoyed Ghosts of the civil dead. Definitely ahead of its time, especially considering the trend for privatizing prisons. Nick Cave is awesome in it, as he is at pretty much everything. Search out Dogs in Space. Another underground Aussie film with a young Michael Hutchence starring.

On the Nick Cave front i just watched his new film One more time with feeling. Amazing, insightful and touching with consideration to what he went through with his sons death. His new album is stunning as well.

What we do in the Shadows is a great moving (really funny)

We recently watched 'The Shallows' and I enjoyed it, typical sharky stuff but it has been a while since there was a good monster movie.

(Shambles I would be surprised if you didn't enjoy Zoom, pretty quirky movie - the guy that wrote In the Shadows has a new movie out called 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' - its a fun movie made for a lot younger audience but still fun.)

Bit of an odd movie for me to be putting here but

Kickboxer Vengenge - A kick boxer is out to avenge his brother.

If your not looking for that serious a movie and just fancy a classic cheesy fighting movie then this should do the trick - JCvan Damme as a kickboxer teacher, the same story that has been repeated a number of times, all the cliches, you know how it's going to end before it starts but its just a laugh.

It has really bad reviews on IMDB with a rating of 5.1 - best headline was 'Cinematic turd' :D so you know what to expect.

(mind you the movie could have just filmed Dave Bautista walking around in those shorts and I would have been sold )

I just watched Square Grouper from the makers of the Cocaine Cowboys doco. This one is about smuggling ganja into Florida. Very interesting. Especially the entire town / city in the Everglades that was doing it. Pretty much everyone that lived there. Worth a watch.

I watched that a wee while ago and really enjoyed it. The size of the market was crazy and I really liked those old dudes.

Yeah they were cool as fuck. Especially the Everglades City guys. The one that never got charged was a classic.

Strange as I really didn't enjoy it - I give it a few tries but gave up each time.

I understand that one perfectly. I gave up on it the first time round too after about half an hour.

Now I've watched it again and I appreciate it, you have to be somewhat in to your American history to appreciate it otherwise it's a big no no dull and boring etc.. but if you have the slightest bit of interest in it then it's enjoyable and accurate as a film can be.

Consumer: Saw Dogs in Space too and thought it was okay but would probably have to watch it again to see if it really grabs. That documentary sounds interesting too - will track it down.

Bear: Zoom (and one or two other of your recent recommendations) are on my ToView list. Got the former to view in the nearish future...

Thanks both for the tips <3

Watched the new Rob Zombie film over the weekend

31 - I was fairly disappointed with it, it's the usual mix of trashy/slasher stuff but it just seemed to miss the mark and the entire thing felt pretty tired.

Also watched ARQ - meh! Same old story 'stuck in a time loop' but it's very dull - save your money /bandwidth.

Dogs in Space my only really resonate with Aussies from around my generation. Very much like many sharehouses i lived in when i was young.

Square Grouper does sound interesting - I've just grabbed a copy so I might watch tonight or tomorrow. Glad I watched it - thanks Consumer.

Shambles is the other one 'Tangerine' ? I can remember mentioning that a while back and it is funny - very random and not really sure what was going on but worth a watch for the artsy feel (shot on Iphone)

^ I've got Zoom queued up to watch sometime over the next few days but I'd have to have a looksee back over the end of the last thread to recall others now, Bear. Lawdy has my memory gotten bad these last couple years 8(

(or has it...? buggered if i can remember now... :sus:)

I did watch Tangerine and enjoyed it quite a lot though. Fairly standard of its type in many ways (I happen to be rather fond of that "type" though so fine by me) but I too was especially impressed with it being shot entirely on iPhones. Just goes to show how relatively easy it could be to make a film worth a public release using kit that is totally ubiquitous these days.

I think I'll watch Chappie later- sounds like a decent show.

Meant to ask what you thought of Chappie. Very mixed opinions here as seemed to be the case everywhere else. Personally I loved it but plenty here thought it was awful (although why is utterly beyond me).

Knew plenty of houses along those lines during my college days but never actually lived in one myself cos I got my own place when I was 16. May only have been a bedsit but was well-chuffed with it at the time - would no doubt have been a lot more fun living in more communal environs though :!

Yes i lived in some wild sharehouses with some crazy characters. Both in Newcastle and Newtown in Sydney which then was basically populated by punks, goths, drag queens and lesbians. Lots of insane partys and lots and lots of drugs. Lifelong friends made along the way. A few casualties but we mostly somehow survived. Good times.

Great movie that you really need to watch

Swiss Army Man - A hopeless man stranded on a deserted island befriends a dead body and together they go on a surreal journey to get home.

Don't read any of the reviews on IMDB as they will ruin the movie.

Didn't get round to Chappie that time. It's the next film I'm going to watch though- hopefully this weekend.

I hope you get to see Chappie. Thought I'd hate it all like omg it's about IT, it'll be boring as fuck ; but it was one of the funniest more endearing films I've seen.

Nothing to offer but I'll be checking out Arnold's suggestion - hopefully it's sick n' nasty.
