For personal history reasons or just by the emotional salience of the lyrics or just the beauty of the music.

Two quite different versions of the same song, the artists both with overtly political but totally divergent orientations, yet both deploring the pointless and fratricidal Great War — both are covers of the original by Eric Fogle —

(She is not a tremendous vocal talent and rather sentimental one in her stylings but she puts her all into this and I find her vocals tremendously affective here…while originated written and performed by a man but something about the imagery of a woman at the graveside is more affecting too.)

(Also instrumentally and vocally full of emotion, with slightly different and more complete lyrics. The greater instrumental range works well too and even incorporates the contemporary soft loud soft dynamic to good effect. The very important and lyrically gorgeous last verse was omitted from the above version for fairly clear political reasons but let's not go there ITT.)

Great Nick Cave song in the OP.

This song melts my heart every time. As do many Leonard Cohen songs.
But this cover is sublime.

And the song above - do you mean Eric Bogle?
In keeping with the covers, this is another if his that fits the bill for me:

Just learned Plummet's vocalist died last year so that makes this cover of Plumb's song Damaged even more melancholic...

Suppose I'll stop there... There's a million songs I could think of.

I haven't worked out how to embed a video yet either.

Metallica - fade to black

Radiohead - fake plastic tree

Block party - I still remember

Sinead O'Connor - heroine

kind of a cheesy one...
baker street - gerry rafferty
You used to think that it was so easy
You used to say that it was so easy
But you're tryin, you're tryin now
Another year and then you'd be happy
Just one more year and then you'd be happy
But you're cryin', you're cryin now
man, the blunt honesty in that verse hurts

so many roads(10/1/94, boston, kid) - grateful dead

"The Start Of Something Beautiful"

Always in my thoughts you are
Always in my dreams you are
I got your voice on tape, I got your spirit in a photograph
Always out of reach you are

Cold inside my arms you are
Simple like a child you are
I remember when you took my hand and led me through the rain
Down inside my soul you are

The more I show the way I feel
The less I find you give a damn
The more I get to know
The less I find that I understand
Innocent, the time we spent
Forgot to mention we're good friends
You thought it was the start of something beautiful?
Well think again.

Mother lost her looks for you
Father never wanted you
I trust to love and then I find you never really felt the same
There's something in your heart so cruel

The most painful and inevitable fact about being human is that one day you are gonna lose everyone and everything you`ve ever known. That is what death is, its so brutal and horrible that we tend to hide and repress the fact that we can die any time. It doesnt matter how young or healthy you are, the angel of death has no mercy and it can take away all you have whenever it wants. We are not in control, life is in control. But knowing that we can die anytime has a positive side to it, because then we can prepare for it, and it can make us appreciate life a lot more while we`re alive and we realise how important it is to do our utmost in this short life. Google Truthcontest and read The Present. Change your life in the best way possible.

Slowdive - When The Sun Hits. It destroys me every time

Cosmic Giraffe - I saw The Shins when they toured for that album way back in 2005. Pink Bullets live was surely a heart-render and still makes me tear up to this day
