Five nights after an unarmed black teenager was shot dead in Ferguson, Missouri by an officer from the town’s predominantly white police force, tensions were once again running high on Wednesday. Teargas was fired at demonstrators and two reporters were arrested.

The Washington Post condemned the detention of its journalist as “illegal” and an “assault on the freedom of the press to cover the news”. The Huffington Post attacked the arrest of its reporter as “militant aggression”. Its journalist said that the “police resembled soldiers more than officers”.

Groups of protesters, demonstrating over the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown, were confronted by armed police in riot and military gear.

The Guardian’s Jon Swaine witnessed the arrest of two reporters: Wesley Lowery of the Washington Post and Ryan J Reilly of the Huffington Post.

Jon writes:

The two reporters were taken in cuffs from a McDonald’s in downtown Ferguson and placed in an unmarked white police van.

“They’re reporters,” shouted one member of the public, who had also been in the restaurant. Another customer confirmed seeing the pair at work inside. Lowery and Reilly both tweeted about being asked to leave the restaurant moments before the pair were seen being arrested.

Asked why he was being detained, the first reporter shouted: “For videotaping them.” When I approached a police line in an effort to confirm the reporters’ identities, I was threatened with arrest and told to retreat.

The arrests came as a line of police in riot gear swept eastward along West Florissant street, the main drag in downtown Ferguson where demonstrations have flared for the past three nights. Residents were forced out of the street as they tried to return to their homes.

Where are all of those open-carry freedom defenders now?

People are jumping the gun. The cop may have acted out of line, but this kind of thing doesn't just happen for no reason, usually. I wouldn't think so at least but hey I could be wrong! From what I have caught, the cop got assaulted, and there may have been a struggle for his weapon. A shot went off in the cruiser. No matter, you don't assault a cop.

Interesting you make absolutely no mention of this, or the rioting, or stores looted, and burnt down in the following days. Yea... A kid dies so it gives you the go ahead to loot and commit arson. Black Panthers are calling for violence. The cops have a right.

People are demanding the cops name be released (who is either in the hospital or was sent to the hospital himself with wounds). How is this positive? How is this acceptable? He would himself probably get murdered.

The cop may have acted rashly, even if he was assaulted, as is the story. He probably shouldn't have shot someone if they were running, but the story is that he was just assaulted, and had a fight over his weapon. A shot went off. There was heat.

I'm not really meaning to come in saying I know exactly what happened... But you presented this your way... And there's more to it, and potentially enough to not paint this as some injustice on the oppressed as you hope it is.

Hey, look, the resident fascist is supporting police brutality and the shutting down of basic constitutional rights! Who woulda thunk? 8)

Aren't "2nd amendment rights" meant to stop this sort of thing?
Oh, right - that's delusional redneck mythology.

If people are rioting, looting, and burning down businesses, then its understandable for the cops to react as they have. It's hard to know how to respond perfectly in situations, though.

Other violence has escalated. Cops have been shot at. It has been reported that 'New Black Panthers' have called for violence against cops.

Ehheh... I've never seen this happen quite honestly. Keep posting your photos.

Looks like phallic insecurity to me.
Either way, nice police state you guys got there. Land of the free, home of the private prison - yeah?

Fucking Batman and Robin.

bit pattern, how did I know you would say that? Stupid question. I should whip myself 23 times for writing it.

How about you come to America, and let me know the first instance you see something like those photos you posted.

As for the detaining of the press, this I agree was wrong, from what I read. But what I have read about the people, I can't say tensions with such crowds would be nothing.

Are you saying the photos are faked? Or are you really so ignorant to not have heard about the open-carry activist movement?

I have heard about it. Yes. I'm asking you to come live here for awhile and see just how common this kind of thing is. I live in a city of over a million people in the metro area, and I have never seen someone carrying an assault rifle in the open. I've lived in a few cities and have never seen someone carry an assault rifle in the open. I'd be a bit nervous if I saw it, yes, even if they were white.

How many times have you seen a young, black man gunned down in cold blood? And that is a hell of a lot more common than people doing crazy open-carry shit. Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it isn't a thing.
