What are you currently reading? v2

I have a book of recipes I've been reading, not much else lately.

Haha, yeah, I'm reading Larousse Gastronomique at the moment, lots of classic French techniques, recipes, great Encyclopaedia too, I got loads of cookbooks/recipe books etc..

The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson, I'm into my cyber punk at the mo

^ I want to read that!

Got zero concentration at the mo so not able to read, is driving me insane.. been perusing this though:

Not a *lot* of reading involved, but some :)

Can't think of too many on here who might read this..but maybe one or two. A guide to birdsong and tuning in to planet earth.

Im about an hour and a half into it, and he has yet to metnion anything concrete about consuming Opium, its all been pre-amble.

Yep, I know exactly what you mean. There's only maybe a third of it actually dedicated to opium. There are some gorgeously vivid passages in said pre-amble though, which makes me love it dearly. Though DeQuincey's prose coupled with a Titchmarshesque narrator would probably be a little too much.

I'm reading 'The Long Tail' by Chris Anderson

It's quite an interesting book about making money by exploiting the huge niche markets that have opened up since the internet started.

From “Selfish, Little: The Annotated Lesley Ann Downey”, by Peter Sotos

Extremely
NSFW:
Every book I’ve ever written begins and ends with Lesley Ann Downey. Every single one. Every thing I’ve fucked has been a stab at the idea of her somehow in my pathetically empty hands. Not as flesh and hair and precisely examined childhood but as simple, personally degrading pornography. It’s the only way I know her. It’s the only way I know of her. Almost all of it in badly reproduced black and white. I have more color photos of her mother than I do of her. It’s nothing to say something has value as pornography. The universal possibilities are rudimentary. I’m not really working backwards, I’m trying for more. I’m getting better at it and I’m finding her little worth increases constantly. How ugly it would be to say my life changed inexorably after seeing the photos of her darling little smiling face juxtaposed to the details of her torture and murder and burial. And how thin my excuses and denial would sound… I don’t want to talk about what was. About my first time fucking some willing same-aged thing or the first time I saw a photo of a naked child being sweetly molested. I’m not interested in trawling backwards so that you can point out where I’ve been locked all these years… It must seem like I’m trying to explain myself. It must seem like I’m desperate enough to finger hypocrisies and social inconsistencies. I’m bored with remembering my low-impact arrest. Much more then you are. I know what Andrea Dworkin sounds like when she talks about her rape in every fucking book. I am not bored with Lesley Ann Downey’s very careful positioning on the bed of some stranger’s shitty dilapidated house.”

I wanted more and more drool and blood and physical mess. These pigs would slide out of my ass and I’d hear my own blood drip out onto the floor. Feel trickles that remind you of ants running up and down the hair on your fat naked pimpled legs. Crabs were not uncommon in here. Ants would not be a surprise. I could smell the cum they pissed and dribbled into me. I’d shit it back out. I’d press on my gut and hole and fart out spittle of blood and cum clumps. You’ve smelled the way cum stinks when it mixes with your own shit. Just your shit. My shit was pitch black and slow from all the antiseptics and anusol I swallowed and couldn’t puke back.

Ah, sorry. I tried to give a fair warning but those NSFW tags tend to be so inviting. ;)

Finished:
Last Train To Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley
Very detailed but interesting book on Elvis up until he was drafted.. I'm fascinated by America in the 50's and 60's and the author places his story well in its social context.

Nearly finished:
killing Pablo
Got it based on a recommendation on this thread - absolutely nuts the shit Escobar got away with, and good detail on how dirty the Americans went in South America

Starting next:
Not sure - either
Woody Guthrie - Bound For Glory - Bob Dylan idolised Guthrie, and said this book influenced him even more than On the Road
or
Cosmic Serpent: DNA and the Origins of Knowledge - about Ahayuasca and Shamanism in South America with a side order of Neurology and Biology

Ah, sorry. I tried to give a fair warning but those NSFW tags tend to be so inviting. ;)
which book were you quoting?

after seeing yours and knockando's comments in the gibberings thread, i took my Sotos to bed and started reading it this morning when I woke.

boring ramblez NSFW'd for those who wanna skip walls of text
NSFW:

random thoughts after flicking through and reading excerpts:

':( what on earth made me buy this?' --> 'jesus WTF was I thinking about at the time?' --> 'urgh. I'll never make it through the whole thing' --> 'hmn, okay, it's unpleasant, but I like the questions it's making me ask', --> 'also like how it makes me generate those questions' --> 'ahh. yup now I know why I thought it would be worth a read'.

ticks a lot of my boxes about touchy subjects. I love writers who approach contentious subjects like this. i don't trust him yet, like i would indiscriminately say Chris Morris or Will self, but I have an inclining he's got good intentions. I hope so anyway

is this where throbbing gristle got their inspiration from for the hindley/brady track you once posted or is that from a different time/source? [edit] i know it's from the court transcript, but I just meant did a Sotos book inspire the song

this is the book I've got, which is a compilation I think. didn't know about him previous to buying this and it's sat on one of my bookshelves since 2005.
if anyone's read this and has any comments on it, please ramble. I'm interested

I'd still like to know if stuff like "It’s nothing to say something has value as pornography. The universal possibilities are rudimentary. I’m not really working backwards, I’m trying for more." is supposed to make sense. If so, what sense? The first two sentences might, with some leaps of faith, mean something like "anything can be pornographic", but why not just say that, or at least be slightly clear about it?

Maybe it's an artistic device, meaning subordinated to impression. I never got on with James Joyce although I do have time for Max Ernst and Dali. But I'm a fairly linear thinker, verbally.
