Current medicines:
Prescribed 4 mg clonazepam a day.

Current problems:
Want to switch to the equivelant dose of diazepam. Some sources say it should be 40 mg diazepam a day. Most sources say it should be 80 mg diazepam a day.

History:
Withdrawn from Xanax 2-3 mg a day CT (short term use, 4-5 months), Withdrawn from Rivotril 2 mg a day CT (long term use, 2 years).

Question:
What the fuck should I do greenlighters? My GP knows my history, she likes me, she prescribed the clonazepam the second time round due to inneffectiveness of certain anti-depressant medicines.

I know it's boring topic, but help me out. Young, scared and don't want another Summer stuck in withdrawal/isolation. I want to get out there and live life without having to worry about anything let alone medicines FFS!

There is quite a bit of variation amongst the benzo charts; do with what your doctor suggests, and if that doesn't cover you go back and tell her.

^ Ha ha, nah it's a joke; whenever I refer to Australia on BL I always say Oz, and some guy in OD once asked where the hell I was talking about and johanneschimpo made some crack about either the country or the fucked up prison... so I changed my location. I love that show. =D

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! i shouldnt BE ON FUCKING CLONAZEPAM 4MG DAILY! IT SUCKS DICK! FUCK! AM I RETARDED? TOO YUNG FOR DRUG WITHDRAWAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah man OZ is/was a great fucking show for the SBS. I completely dug it, but it got yanked off right due to all the brotherhood bangings and shit?

Fuck man, that show should be a deterence to all u drug traffickers reading this site! Imprisonment rates are steadily rising in Australia, they'll fucking lock u up over a fight these days people! Trust me, i know this shit for real.

^ It's fucking fantastic, I never saw it on SBS though, right now I've got the entire series on DVD and am watching it, am up to Season 4, haven't seen past that so don't spoil it. ;)

When are you going to go see your doctor about tapering down with valium?

Mr. B,
I haven't started yet. I've done a taper schedule, printed out 2 copies (60 mg diazepam daily for 4 weeks which is like 12 tablets) and I am ready to hear the doctor reject my plan. But I'll save my arse with printed out info from Oz Medical sites.

just a short post of support

been rx'ed clonazepam for almost two years now - trying to sort through a whole mess of neurological (psychological is another, lengthy, heavily and uselessly intellectual matter) issues..

after barely two months of taking it, i felt the anxiolytic effects diminish significantly... intuition told me this was not a long-term solution, so i 'tapered' by cutting my dose by 1mg/week.. of course my brain had other ideas - and the horror that was withdrawal will never be forgotten... and so the cycle continues to this very day...

godspeed you! black emperor

I know this is an old thread, but for the sake of keeping things simple I would just like to give my opinions on benzo withdrawal in Australia.

I have just quit a 2 year Alprazolam 3mg/day dependence.

My doctor wanted me to stay on, but I had just withdrawn from Tramadol and thought I would give Alpazolam a shot.

Withdrawal Schedule:

Day 0: Xanax 0.5mg qid + 1mg at bed time
Day 1: Xanax 0.5mg qid
Day 2: Xanax 0.25mg qid
Day 3: Xanax 0.25mg qid
Day 4: Xanax 0.125mg qid
Day 5: stop

Some of the drugs that are available in Australia that helped me:

1. Phenibut: This is a supplement that can be bought online from body building stores. It is a GABA-b agonist. This was great at relatively low doses, but as the days go by a rapid increase occurs, so I capped my Phenibut use to 1 week. Just remember to stop using phenibut before it has you by the balls. Dose: 2-4 grams per day.

2. Magnesium Aspartate Dihydrate: This is a wonder drug during benzo withdrawal and can be purchased from any chemist or health food store. Typical uses include muscle relaxation, anxiety relief, tension relief. Dose: 1-2 grams 3 to 4 times a day.

3. Taurine: This can be purchased from your local health food store. The typical uses include muscle relaxation, anxiety relief, tension relief. Dose 1-2 grams 3 to 4 times a day.

4. Doxylamine Succinate: This is a otc antihistamine sleep aid which can be purchased at any chemist in Australia. This is a great drug used in the Magnesium, Taurine stack. Dose 25mg at night for sleep.

Notes:

1. The combination of Magnesium and Taurine almost completely relieved my symptoms without being addictive or cross tollerent.
2. My doctor gave me Zolpidem CR for sleep, but this threw me back into withdrawal the following day. So stick to the antihistamines for sleep.
3. And for all those who think substituting to a long half life benzo is a good idea... I found it super hard to quit valium and had to taper over 3 months to get off. I have now quit Xanax 3mg prolonged use in under a week, and to be honest, I really do not feel like using it any more.
4. Exercise is super important during withdrawal. Make sure to do at least 30mins to 1 hour of high intensity exercise every day if you can manage. Your body will thank you.
5. I did not miss a day of work during this withdrawal.
6. It is generally considered best to taper with a long half life benzo, but I just wanted out. So this may not be for everyone.
7. I tried Kava for the symptoms but it has no effect. It is also supposed to work through the GABA-a receptor so this is not a good choice to help benzo withdrawal. (Yes it is still available in health food stores)

Duration of Withdrawal:

There were 3 distinct phases.

1. Acute Withdrawal lasting approximately 1 week.
2. Body numbness and sleep disturbances lasting approximately 1 week.
3. Lingering symptoms lasting approximately 1 week.

So all up it took about 3 weeks to hit baseline. Not bad considering. I encourage you to think about a quick taper under your doctors supervision as prolonging this withdrawal phase eats away at your mental state.

Symptoms Experienced:

Body Numbness
Anxiety
Muscle tension
Over excitability
Anger
Short Attention Span
Trouble Sleeping

Conclusion:

I hope this is of some help to people trying to kick the habit in Aus. I highly recommend the Magnesium + Taurine Stack to relive symptoms throughout the day and at bed time. I just wish my doctor had have told me this...

It is bloody brilliant when you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

^^^^ What a useful & well thought-out post

Even though I have never endured a benzo dependency, this is info that anyone with any kind of dependency can take on board.

Kudos! :)

^^^ Above post is being emailed as we speak to a bloke I know whose been pushing the benzos too hard.

Well written, well done. Hopefully, it will work for this fellow.

No worries.

Just remind your mate that there is no silver bullet, but if he gives it time and patience things will get back to normal in no time.

If he is on over 4mg Alprazolam/day I would not suggest he tries to stop cold turkey.

And remind him that Phenibut is great, but it will create its own withdrawal symptoms if you push it too hard for too long. (Try to cap its use to 1 week in the acute withdrawal phase. There is absolutely no reason why he should not start using Magnesium and Taurine now as directed to help reduce his benzo intake. Both supplements are non-toxic at the levels required to bring some relief.)

Make sure you friend joins BL and get him to post how he is going.

All the best to anyone trying to stop.

He's well, well, well over that (add diazepam and bromazepam to the mix as well) so it'll be a taper. He's also seeing an addiction specialist at the moment as his psych of several years has finally said 'this is beyond my capacity to treat'.

And remind him that Phenibut is great, but it will create its own withdrawal symptoms if you push it too hard for too long. (Try to cap its use to 1 week in the acute withdrawal phase.)

I've used phenibut, as have others I know on my reccomendation. It essentially does to the brain what Xanax does by a different method, less effectively, and is unscheduled. Good stuff none the less, and you're right about capping its use, not just in terms of length of time, but also dosage. When a mate of mine gave it a crack, he had too much and had to drive to work rather than ride is his motorcycle because his balance was too stuffed.

Make sure you friend joins BL and get him to post how he is going.

Considering his dalliances with law enforcement of late, I believe he'd like to avoid internet posts. But I will advise how he goes. Best of luck to you too in your efforts Nab.

Has anyone else found any supplements that ease their benzo withdrawal symptoms in Aus?

L-Theanine?

I totally forgot about l-theanine during withdrawal, but I would be interested in experiences?

Maybe a Magnesium + Taurine + L-Theanine stack would be beneficial?

What about 5-htp? Melatonin?

Fortehlulz: How is your mate doing? Did he find any relief?
